So cats and iguana's can actually co-igsist? That's odd to me... I kinda thought they'd be enemies for life.

It REALLY depends on the two animals. Personally, I would NEVER leave Gil unsupervised with any animal (or small child for that matter). My cat is an orange tabby... Gil HATES her, and we finally figured out it's because of her color--it seems that he thinks of her as competition. Silly Gilly!

From what little I could see of your ig, kiekie420, I'd say you're right about his gender. I'm curious about his color... does he always look that way?

About his diet... collards are GREAT. Romaine, kale, and bananas should be fed as treats or on an occassional basis. Instead of the romaine and kale, try mustard greens, dandelion greens, argula, and turnip greens. Mango and papaya are great staple fruits. Also, you can grate winter (hard) squash: butternut, acorn, ect and feed on a regular basis.

What brand of iguana pellets are you feeding? Here at Iguana Center, we recommend using only RepCal brand. The reason is that many of the other brands use a small amount of fish meal in their product; to our knowledge, RepCal is the only brand that is completely vegetarian. When you feed the pellets, always be sure to soak them first. If they're fed dry, they can contribute to dehydration.

Here's a link to our food chart.

Last but certainly not least, WELCOME to the Herp Center Network!

Personally I think it is a terrible idea. I got a rescued iguana because the lady was going to 'let him go' in northern Washington in February....
Her reasoning was because she let it free roam (with out any heat or a place to himself) with her 6 cats, (and he was fed a steady diet of cat food, she'd just dump a whole bag on the floor and let the cats and the iguana graze), so he got territorial and killed 2 cats and mauled another because they were pestering him, so it was 'his fault' and she was going to throw him out in the snow...

I couldn't... imagine seeing an iguana kill 2 cats... this boy must be a big one, right? He's not Bud's size, is he? Bud's just like... four foot long and just not very big. But ****, I just can't imagine that.

See I learned something new today.... I thought Romaine was "good" to feed Ghengis on a daily basis. I didn't realize it should only be as a "treat" I will definately change his diet up a bit. Ghengis has always been that orangy color, which concerned me until his vet told me that he is healthy. His color hasn't changed much at all in the 4 years that i've had him. RepCal is the brand of his dry food and I always soak them before feeding. I am always affraid of the pellets getting stuck in his throat or something. As far as the cats co-habitating with Ghengis, they all get along very very well. Ghengis doesn't bother with their food and water and they leave his food and water alone, it's like they all know what belongs to who.....kinda strange but good.

Thank you for the link to the food chart....Ghengis will be getting some new tastes this evening

You're very fortunate if the cats and ig leave each other (and eachother's food) alone.

Does your vet do annual blood tests or just a visual exam?

So tell me what fun treats is Ghengis in for tonight??

First I must say that I LOVE this site!! Everyone here is polite and VERY informative!! Thank you all

Tonight Ghengis tried a few new things......
1. Mustard Greens
2. Collard Greens
3. grated squash
4. Kale (I gave him a little since he loves it)
5. soaked RepCal pellets
6. small amount of grated carrots

He ate most of everything I gave him, the grated squash he wasn't too fond of, he picked around it. I noticed on the food list there was brocolli, that is the leaves only right?

Also,I guess I am lucky that Ghengis and my cats get along so well!

Taz wasn't that big at all, but its the size the fight in the iguana, not the iguana in the fight!
Aside from his issues with cats he was the sweetest iguana i've ever encountered.
When we got him he was disgustingly thin and had alot of healing war wounds, the cats put up a good fight.

Taz:

Taz and Pat (my boyfriends brother...he wasn't too thrilled because we were having to rehome Taz)
