Brown Iguana?

I just got an iguana from a guy that seemed healthy and was in a great enclosure etc. But his coloring was about 95% brown. I couldn't figure out what his problem was, so I took him to the vet. They checked him over, and he's as healthy as the come. I asked about the color and they said he was a brown iguana. I didn't know that exsisted. Do they? Or is that just a name for something else? He looks a lot like a green, just smaller spikes and brown coloring. I would put a pic on here, but my camera's busted so I won't be able to get some for about a month. Thanks for settling my curiosity!

I've never heard of anything called a "brown iguana". If it looks like a green iguana,.. its a green iguana. The brown coloration could be just its normal color, or it could be a sign of stress or of being too cold.
Was the ig this color before you aquired it?

Yea he came this way. As for temps, he has a great basking area on his second platform. It has the UV and basking light. And there are 3 heat pad that he can lie on if he wants when the lights are off. Overall he's in great condition. He sort of looks more like a female but it's a 100% certainty that he's male. Oh well, doesn't matter. So I have a brown colored ig! I wouldn't trade him for any other color:P

Yeah, pictures would be helpful, maybe you can borrow a camera, or we'll just have to wait a month and tell you what we think then.

No, what I meant was he that color in his normal living conditions before he was moved to your home. If not the color may be stress related.
Its also possible that he is going to shed. When I first got Zok she was a nasty brown color. First shed she turned a bright green like she was supposed to look.
You would have thought someone switched lizards on me!

Green iguanas can vary animal to animal from aqua-blue to red. My ig is a common green but has been orange-yellow for the last 18 to 20 months.

Brown though could be worrysome if he is that colour for a long time. Typically stress or low temps can cause this as Merlin pointed out. You mentioned that he just changed owners and homes which is known to strees these a lot, they really are wimps.

Some more things could be playing into this and while we can't diagnose we can help with enviroment, diet, and housing. What are the stats on his cage: dimensions, basking temp, low temp, UVB bulb brand and model, UVB bulb age and placement, amount of light after the lamps are turned off for the night? As well as the igs diet?

I had a female iguana that was basically brown for most of the time. She was ugly, but the sweetest ig I ever owned. She passed away the end of last year I had her for almost 8 yrs.....I figured it was where she was from...her locale....Lyn

Sorry I should've been more clear. That's the way he's been for years apparently. To answer the questions about his living conditions, I'll try my best to give you a run down. Hopefully you can picture it. I'm going to try and find a camera here ASAP. Anyways, his cage is about 6x5x3.5, temps are normal. As I said before, he has a platform where the basking light is. The UV and basking light are attatched to the side of the cage at an agle. This gives him a good area to soak up heat. He has the whole bottom part of the cage to cool down. But if he wanted to, he could go on one of the 3 heat pads around his cage. I keep these on incase he wants to use them at night. The temps in the room are just above room temp. He gets misted with a spray bottle, and our house has a higher humidity which helps. Food, he's eating the hard food for igs, as well as a variety of veggies and a fruit. Seems to love Kale. He's got a water dish, as well as a tub that I fill up and put in there once a week. I personally have only needed to do this twice now, since he hasn't been round long. Well, I think I answered all the questions. If you need anymore info on him, I'd be happy to give it. Thanks for the help all

What are your basking temps? And humidity level? How often do you feed him the hard food for iggys? When I had my iggy I used a hard food for him and wasnt very satisfied with it, so I stuck to veggies/fruits. Do you give him caluium supps? And are you soaking his veggies in water to help keep him hydrated? sorry for all the questions!

Not a problem. I love answerin em. The basking temps are high 90's low 100's.The exact humidity level I'm unsure of, but it remains fairly high. I forgot to mention I have a humidifier that I turn on if I'm not around to mist. As for the food, the hard food he enjoys. I feed him daily and he eats the majority of what's in front of him. The veggies are put in the sink and rinsed before given to him. He gets a supplement that has D3 and calcium. There's also another one I give to out B1 (i think that's it) back into the veggies, because I freeze them.
