Interesting behavior...
My boyfriend brought this up to me a while ago and I thought nothing of it until I noticed it myself: When people come into the room that Gandhi lives in
he will run over to his food bowl and start gobbling up food. My boyfriend thought he was eating out of nervousness and I told him that from what I have read he would not eat if he was nervous....I thought it was just a coincidence but it is pretty consistent behavior. No matter where he is or what he is doing, he will run over to his bowl and chow when we approach him. Is this some kind of territorial display?

Hmmm...most likely, but it is a bit wierd. Does he eat normal amounts at his regular feeding time as well?
BTW, did he adapt to sleeping on his ig mattress? Does he like it? If you have a pic of him on it, I'd love to see it ![]()

I never read about that before in igs but I've seen it in dogs, specially abandoned dogs taken from the street into someone's home.
They eat the food fearing you will take it away from them. It's a sign of heavy stress. How long do you have your ig?

Wow, thats interesting. I have had Gandhi since 10/31/05, so not long, and he was a rescue. I dont think he is heavily stressed, he seems like he is having a pretty good time....In fact, my first response when my boyfriend pointed it out to me was that it seemed like maybe he was eating when he saw us as a way of interacting-like how we eat popcorn at the movies. If he is stressed he usually goes somewhere where it is awkward for us to catch him or where we cant see him, and this makes him feel secure.
Kira-he does love his bed. I dont have pics because I dont have a camera but I will be getting one soon and I will definately send you photos!! He gets fed a full plate of food that just stays in his cage, so he eats throughout the day.

There are a few different stress behaviors, it's not just a "on/off" situation, from changing color or closing their eyes to play dead, they have a lot of different ways to display it.
If he is a rescue, maybe it's something related to his previous experience. Maybe in time it will disappear...
