New Igs
Well, went and picked up those two Iggies today that I adopted from a couple that put them up on GIS's adoption page. They were only about 15 miles away. They're little angels, but they deffinitely need some serious TLC.
The male, Rex, is 4 years old, doesn't seem to be in real bad shape, but he has an abcess on his chin that I'll have to get him into the vet for this week. He's got a few little scars, but nothing major. Very active and curious. They had found him about a year ago at a pet shop and brought him home. Now the female, Spunky, she's about 15 years old and is not in the greatest shape. She looks emaciated. I know she just went through laying eggs, but you can see her ribs and hip bones and her legs are very thin. She doesn't seem too weak though, that's good. I'm already working on fattening her up, she's had some greens and berries. Can anybody suggest any certain foods that would put some wieght on her quick? She'll now be eating the same diet that my others get, greens, veggies, fruits, no pellets, only fresh yummies. She's missing a couple back claws, quite a few spikes, looks to have broken a few toes in the past, missing the end of her tail, has quite a few scabs on her body that need some treatment. Other than that, she's active and alert, and very curious as well. And while I was checking them out once home, I saw that they had little tiny red mites on them, ugh. So I wipped them down with some mineral oil and will repeat that tonight as well. Think it has helped, the tiny red dots aren't moving anymore. I'm going to have to replace their little 75 W UV bulbs real soon, not enough. Also, so far so good with my big boy. He's smelled and seen the new boy and no bad reactions, but he's only seen him through the plexi of his door. We'll give them plenty of time to get used to eachother. Here's a couple pics of them:

Well some things (that were recommended to me by an very successful and experienced rehabber) for putting on weight is butternut, green beans, and RepCal Adult Iguana pellets (moistened/soaked). Of course plenty of good greens (especially collards) to balance things out. Also alfafa is good source of vegetable protein. I know you mentioned not using pellets but they have even been recommended on this site--especially for hydration. Used in moderation they are a good supplement. A friend who adopted a Metabolic Bone Disease iguana who the vet said wouldn't make it used these suggestions for putting weight on along with a MegaRay EB light. It has been a year and RZ is doing wonderful.

That's too bad about the mites, I would attack the problem full on with a deep cleaning to ensure it doesnt get out of control. They can be a real pain in the butt. I would especially make sure to keep them for away from your uninfested herps.
FYI mites can't swim so picking them off in the tub is a good safe bet. I used a Q-tip to pick all of the mites off of the head and around they eyes when Diz and Marvin had them. I also added a bit of betadine to the water to help clean out the mite bites.

Thanks Marie, Lyn & Lacey.
I appreciate the feedback. If I don't see an improvement in the ol' girl real soon, I'll go get & try the soaked pellets. I have butternut and green beans here, they'll be getting some of that in the morning. I think they were just a little too stressed to eat much at all today, but that's ok, they seem to be adjusting ok. The little' boy does not like the dogs, he sure knows how to use that tail of his! LOL. Yeah, total scrub down on the mites, ick. They'll both be getting nice long soaks in the morning as well, didn't want to do too much today, with them being stressed from the move and all. But the mineral oil rub down seems to have helped quite well. No more moving red dots, I'll treat the wood tomorrow along with their enclosure. They are really sweet babies, they are so curious and playful, even the ol' girl was movin' them bones around pretty good. They had to hang out with us for a few hours when they got here. I dragged their enclosure all the way home, bouncing on a trailer, and a good portion of it is glass, and it didn't break. But then, 5 ft. from the front door, one of the side panels shattered! So luckily, before my family's shop closed down, my brother stocked a whole bunch of plexi-glass sheets in his garage and I had a new panel cut and installed before the nascar race was over. I'll keep you guys updated on their progress. Thanks again.

Kira,
It is so great that you are giving them a home. I am sure they will do great with you. Good luck on the mites. They can be very tough to get rid of.

Here's an update on the (HA! I just thought of a new word: Igfestation, lol, yeah, ok, I'm too tired) Igs and how they're adjusting.
So far so good, nobody has shown any aggression at all. The 2 new ones, Spunky & Rex are doing good, they came out and played a bit, they ate some, but not a lot and they had baths again. Spunky, the old girl, really seems to enjoy the long warm soaks. I wish they'd eat more though. The real action today was with my Big Boy, Willow. He spent the day being a turd, lol. Not aggresive at all, just a turd. He wouldn't stay in his enclosure at all, had to constantly come out and trudge to the couch in my bedroom that's in front of a south facing window and stand guard there. I know he could smell that Rex had been there, so I guess he felt he needed to stay there and guard, lol. But then as soon as I'd walk out of the room, he'd take off for other parts of the room and get into things he's not supposed to and make a mess. So then I'd scoop him up and try to take hm back, he'd have a squirm fest, jump out of my arms and back to the window. And when I made him go back to his enclosure he'd paint the floor that wonderful green color! He did this FOUR times today, the little stinker! But he's so cute, I couldn't help but laugh at his antics. And once he figured out where the new guys enclosure is (he walked past it several times and didn't notice it at first, lol), he kept trying to climb up and get a good look at the new guys. So I picked him up and held him close while he got a gander at Rex & Spunky. Still no aggression, just some head bobbing back and forth, that's about it. No lundging or hissing or anything. So that's good. It's 8:30pm and Big Boy has finally settled down. I put up pics of Spunky & Rex and their habitat (that will soon get some remodel work done) on my site. Easier than going through and downsizing all the pics I want to post. So stop by and take a peek. Just hit the link, then click on "Spunky" or "Rex" at your left. http://kiradwyer.com/Igpage.html

One thing I would suggest...along with the Mega Ray EB suggestion already made...is adding some probiotics to the diet. It's a good maintenance practice, too. NutriBac or Benebac are both good products for adding the cute little microflora buddies back into the digestive tract...

Just wanted to give you guys an update on the new guys.
We're working on getting rid of the mites, as discussed in another thread. Rex's appetite is very good. He's eating like a hog now. Spunks, I am still struggling to get her to eat more than a few bites a day. She did good yesterday, she ate more in one sitting than she had all week put together. But, then today it was back to almost nothing again. I won't give up on her though. I think she likes her new shelf, she seems more relaxed, like she knows she's not going to slide off of this one. Here she is on her new shelf: ![]() And here's Rex today: ![]() Here's the link to their habitat page, scroll down to see the pics of the changes we made: http://kiradwyer.com/IgHabitatSnR.html
