iguana
hay all
I have a good freind who has a 3 year old iguana, and he has enlisted into the navy and he is leaving at the end of the month and he asked me to if I would take his iguana and its enclosure. I havent done much research but I have read the care sheet on this site, I currently have two Chinese Water Dragon, banded basklis, armadillo lizard, and a savanna monitor is there anything you all can add to the care sheets that would help me prepare for this new herp??????? ![]()

Yes, money, you'll need more money. LOL
That's a lot of lizards to care for. But, you already know the basics of heat and lighting (at least I hope you do, LOL). Iguanas are strict herbivores, unlike some of your other lizards, so no stray mice allowed in the iguana enclosure. I'm glad to hear that your friend is finding a good home for the iguana. Is this a forever move, or just temporarily until he returns? If you have read the caresheets and understand all that they entail, I think you will do just fine. They are definitely not harder than a savanna monitor!Good luck and ask any question you have. We're always here to help!

Well, if you think about it, once you have the initial setup, cages, lights heat, humidifier etc. etc., the daily routine doesn't really cost that much money. A lot less than carnivorous lizards as far as foods are concerned.
I haven't had to take mine to the vet yet, but I know the price of the vet here (There is only ONE herptile vet in all of Hong Kong) and it wasn't too bad. Probably different in the states. |

The cost of vet care can be a big concern. And the expense can vary greatly from vet to vet. Some are reasonable about it and some take the attitude that tacking the term "Exotics" onto their practice gives them license to charge outlandish prices.

Adding to Merlin's comment, gender plays a big role too.
If the iguana is female, try your best to keep $300 or so set aside for emergency spay surgery when she goes gravid. This iguana safety-bank is so much more critical with female iguanas than males. For males, you basically need a good insurance policy (to pay for breeding season bites) and some extra money for first aid supplies (to bandage your bites and cuts).

Boy does that sound familiar
Ours came as his owner went to Iraq, but he wasn't a baby (12 years old). He was stressed for about a week and then enjoyed the attention he was getting from Sean. |
