go with tyler.

tyler can be a girls or a boys name. so even if you don't know if its a girl or a boy, the name can still be used.

Anthony I know you know that we have iguanas that are similar in size.....I was able to confirm the sex of Gandhi by the end of December (His femoral pores enlarged right around when his snout to vent length reached 7")...from what I have read, if your iguanas femoral pores havent changed by now (isnt Liv's snout to vent length around 8 now? Or more?) maybe that means she is a girl....I think it becomes official when the snout to vent length reaches 10".

Roynan, I think that the 10" snout to vent length is the MINIMUM length it should reach for sexual maturity for a female, not the maximum or fixed size?

Yes, that is what I remember reading......what I was meaning by my post was that if your lizard's femoral pores havent shown any signs of enlarging at this point (was I right about the 8" snout to vent length? I cant remember) then maybe its a sign that she's a girl....I mean, since you're asking us to guess. Like I said, my lizard is a bit smaller than yours and he is definately male.....his face is even changing to show the beginings of jowls. I think what the book said was that if your lizard reaches 10" snout to vent length with no enlarging of femoral pores, then you can officially consider her female. Does this sound right to everyone else? Of course, all lizards develop at their own unique rate, Im sure. (Some develop freakishly long tails...)

Ummmm. To spite everything I knew and all the human resources I had to draw on, it took 2 1/2 years before we could confirm that Rex was a male. Up to the point of displaying first heat, he looked very much female in all characteristics.

Once he entered heat, his jowls filled out, his temporal lobes grew and his femoral pores enlarged and filled.

Because of the characteristics of this prey creature, and the fact that the wild iguana groups are governed by an alpha male, nature provided that all babies and juveniles exhibit female characteristics until they mature at first heat. Otherwise, the alpha male would drive out all the young males, giving them little chance for survival. There is also a series of studies that shows when a group of babies is under perceived attack, the baby males will generally put themselves in a vulnerable position in order to allow the females to escape. But, who has a bunch of babies around to run this test?

Just imaigine the day you wake up in your basking tree, with all your syblings around you and go 'oh ****, I'm male' and you realize that soon you will have to fight the alpha or leave your home for good. LOL

So again, speculation is fun (we actually changed Rex's name 3 times, causing him a good amount of psychological damage), but the reality of the situation is you will not know for sure until the iguana either exhibits first heat or goes gravid. It's only at that point that you can be sure of what you have. ;-)

And then consider this, it was only when Rex was about 8 years old that he exhibited, for the very first time, male breeding behavior!

I say it looks like a male! Too masculine to be female (LOL)!
