Femoral pores – impacted?
Looking at Blob's femoral pores they don't look like the classic pics of male pores. Bob's are much larger showing an opening nearly 1/4 inch in diameter. I have read about someone mentioning impacted femoral pores but can't find any real mention of these.
Have any of you heard of this? Is this with anything I can take care of with, say, long soaks in the bath or should I consult my vet?

Impacted femoral pores are really nasty looking Mark. They do not look normal. They protrude out (swollen) and look very gnarled.
Older igs, such as Blob, tend to have very large (diameter) pores, usually with the plug protruding out. Nothing to be concerned about. Here is a great picture of impacted femoral pores: http://www.whipstaff-ranch.com/iggies.html (along with a SEVERE case of Mouth Rot, viewer beware!). If you suspect impaction, a vet check is best. Treatment involves soaking in water and opening up the pore in order to pull out the plug. Very tricky (as you don't want to cause further damage) so a vet's treatment is best. Generally, impacted pores are caused by poor care and a dirty environment. Neither could be true in Blob's case, so I think he is just showing his age. But a few long soaks to loosen up the material would be helpful for the old guy. Let us know what you find when you compare him to the pictures.

I personally have never heard of it either Mark....but I believe they get more "pronounced" during the breeding season even if personality doesnt change....I assume the femoral pores do change...they rub them around their territories to attract the girls to them.....Lyn

Hope all is okay with Blob Mark. The pics on the lnk Dominick put on his post made me cry. How could anyone get an iguana and then let it get into that state? Surely these people must realise that for an ig to look like that, it is not healthy. Thank goodness for people like you guys here at IC who have the knowledge and the love to start the rehab process with some of the more unfortunate ig's

Yes thank goodness for the guys here and this site but actually the rehabbers are a Minnesota rescue who posted to another well established site specifically for green iguanas for help in rehabing. This site has some links to that site and some got their start there. I found their message board after adopting Huff from their adoption board. And then found this site through that one.

Yes, as Marie so poynerly pointed out. That link is to The Green Iguana Society Website and the folks who posted those pictures are the ones who rescued the poor iguanas.
