Potty Training?

I thought that I had read this somewhere, but is it possible to train an iggy to use a litter box or something? I really like having Halona free-roam as much as she can, but I am always running behind her cleaning up her "accidents". If it is possible, how would you do it? I was thinking of getting a litter box (lined with newspaper) and putting some of her excrement in there. Would that work?

Thanks,
Rebecca

Nope, not that I know of. The little buggers drive you mad trying to get them to just poop in one spot!

Took Rex about 4 years to decide on one corner of the kitchen floor, where he happily does it on newspaper now. But all we could do was keep cleaning up until he settled on one spot.

You could try putting water in it, but all that did for us was get poop AND water to clean up when he consistenly spilled the pan, not even trying to poop in it.

Tub pooping works, but I never had time for that and Rex was never fond of pooping in the tub, so that went bye-bye.

Good luck! It's not easy.

The wife got ours trained pretty quick. Just like any animal, all you need to do is keep placing it in the same place, while the iggy's watching, and after a while they will start going there. Eddie, our green ig, has a dog carrier for a litter box that and a nice warm bath, are the only places he goes.

But it might not work for everyone.

Thanks guys. She's 8yo, so I'm wondering if it's at all possible...like she's already set in her ways. She'll poo real easy in a warm tub, but like you Dominick, I don't always have the time for that. At least she's sensible on where she goes...in a way. Once, when she was hanging out on my shoulder, she jumped down and squatted. Another time, when she was hanging out on my bed (one of her favorite places) she jumped down and went as well. My bedroom rug is getting a beating, but it's better there than on me or the bed. Maybe I'll give it a try and see. I have a spare bottom to an old guinea pig cage that would probably suffice as a litter box.

Thanks,
Rebecca

it is possible but for how long I cannot guarentee I suppose that as long as things dont change your ig should fall into routine dot be surprised if a few accidents do happen. when I lived in my apt both my igs would go across the room and into the bathroom and go on the floor or get into the tub and go. that all changed when I moved and they no longer have acces to the bathroom during the day. i tub poop them in the am but they go twice a day or more now. Jorge my male ig for a time was trained on paper here to gte down on the floor and go on the paper, but that all changed with a slight change in diet and the purchace of the merc vapor bulb so im back at square one. one thing to keep in mind is that no matter how well your iguana acts ist still a wild animal or undomesticated I should say dogs and cats have been kept as pets for 1000s of years reptiles have been kept for what maybe 30 years at best iguanas in general were only being mass imported into the US in the 80s. basically what im trying to say is dont be too disapointed if the best you gte is an occasional ok ill poop on this paper today but if you **** me off tommorow ill poop right where your going to walk =)

LOL Steve. How true. So, I guess that I'll just cross my fingers, but I won't count on anything.

Thanks everyone for your help,
Rebecca

Surprisingly he's been doing this for about years now, his litter box used to be beer cases until he got too big for them. And yes accidents do happen every now and then, but thats the joy of having animals.

I went to the farm section of a store and bought a big rubber tub like thing (I think it's to feed baby cows or something lol). Its round and made of the rubbery stuff that doesn't slip and slide all over or tips. I put it in his cage and fill it with a pitcher of water (fills it about a 1/4 way)and Nadia just balances on the rim and goes potty over the water. If he is out and about for the day he will go right back to his potty if he needs to go. I have newspaper on the bottom of his cage 'cause he does miss the rim sometimes...but at least the mess is all in the cage Or he will potty in the tub....
Just get a type of rubbery bin and leave it in his cage with water in it...that's about all the advice I have....

Thanks Jem. Yeah, I already have a rubbery tub in her enclosure. I was thinking, though, of putting something in the middle of the house...closer to my bedroom. Her enclosure is out in the living room, and it's a trek to get there. So, I was hoping to get something set-up for her at a further point from there. If it goes well, I may put one in another location as well. The problem with putting rubber tubs of water around my house, is that I have 2 kids who love to run around...actually, I'm more worried of them making a mess with the water, rather than Halona...go figure. Just like Cricket said, "That's the joy of having animals"...and kids, too.

Thanks all,
Rebecca

the optimal thing is to have a tub with a filter system does anyone know of a filter system that could dispose of that much waste? i know you still have to clean the filter and all but if you could make it so you have a large tub so they could swim around a bit and soak all day if they so choose that would be nice. ive done the large rubbermaid tubs before and used my wet dry vac to **** out the water then clean the tub and refill it but thats alot of work to do on a daily basis. perhaps someone with the smarts for inventing could come up with a design...
