You are right, some iguanas have grown to 6'-6", most are smaller then that but they will not grow based on thier cage size, and even is someone were to stunt an iguanas growth by cage size just because thier body doesnt grown doesnt mean thier organs stop growing if thier organ attempt to outgrow a thier bodyt then you even more internal problems will occur. You would be best to set this guy straight. Iguanas are def. no beginner reptiles and DO required ALOT of time AND room. I run into this in the tropical fish world as well, lots of keepers think thier fish will only grow to what thier tank allow them to be, and this is just OVERY common MISconception.

First of all might I say that in my opinion you approached that all wrong. Generally I would not 'argue' with a costomer, even if they are completely wrong and rude. Being it seems that argueing only fuels them even more to not take what you are saying into consideration. Polite suggestions would come across more friendly of course.
As for the questions, No, That is a HUGE common myth, they do not grow to the size of there enclosure. Sure if there vent and nose was touching each end of the cage it would stunt them, but that I do not think is how extreme this fellow was talking. Or anyone for the matter. Yes the average adult size is around 5-6';but can exceed 6'. |

I sort of agree with A Sinesis in the fact that an iggy growing to the size of it's cage is a popular misconception. I do however beleive that you were right in standing firm with this guy. If it was me personally, I would have refused to sell him any animal until he came back with a little knowledge under his belt! (I know that you cannot do this if you are employed by someone else tho!) I think you should ask your manager to produce a thorough care sheet for iguanas and hand it out to people before they actually buy the animal and tell them to look it over before making a final decision. As you know, getting any animal is something that should be considered carefully and that is even moreso with an iguana. They take up a lot of time, money and space and with an iguana 2 out of 3 just isn't good enough. Good luck with putting this to your customer and I hope your manager appreciates your true caring nature towards the animals that you sell

Well in one respect that petstore guy was correct. If you stick a little green ig in a small tank, give him a heat rock, no UVB lights and feed him lettuce, yes he will be very stunted, very unhealthy and live a very short life for an iguana (they live 20 to 25 yrs by the way when raised properly). But an ig properly caged, properly fed calcium rich greens and mixed veggies, given ample amounts of proper UVB lighting will in fact grow 5-6 feet in length.
I feel very sorry for any iguanas that petstore sells....well most petstores tell the same story....Lyn (owns 6 iguanas....)

People are so ignorant...
I'd print off a bunch of information to give to the manager, maybe some pictures of iguana inflicted wounds, iguanas with Metabolic Bone Disease, charts of iguana diets, care sheets, and maybe some pictures of proper housing. Anything that would make people think twice before allowing the green devil himself into the house, don't get me wrong, i'd never get rid of Diz, but if I knew back then what I do now I may have found him a different home rather than my own.
