I use a hip lead for Zok my 4ft female. I am quite pleased it. It goes around the back of the body directly in front of the rear legs. I don't care much for the commercial harnesses that the pet shops sell that go around the throat.
One thing that people routinely make the mistake of thinking of a leash in the same way as it relates to dogs. A leash on an iguana is purely a safety feature. You really cant walk them like you would a dog.

I use the same as Merlin. Zair has nearly been choked to death with the so called "iguana/rabbit/ferret" harness. This figure eight loop tightens very quickly on a croc rolling ig. The vest-type harnesses are not much better. They have a serious potential being so close to the neck of strangling when the rolling starts and it automatically wraps around the upper body/neck area. With the rear leg leash, it wraps the lower body, but it's not so life threatening.

not to mention the potential of ripping all the spikes off the back of the neck area

I use a small dog harness for Bob, did every day for a few hours from May until September last summer, with no problems on Bob's spikes, but did not use it as a leach rather a tie off point for him to drag a length of ribbon which was easy to see against the lawn. I also have a dog's ID tag crimped onto the harness with my my phone numbers on it just in case.

This harness has worked great in general but is difficult to take off. If for some reason the ig becomes aggressive when wearing the harness, anytype on the front half of the body, you have to have your fingers with in chomping range to take it off. Takeing this off Bob is one of the only three times Bob has taged me in almost 10 years.

When the ig reaches the end of the lead there is a good chance that the ig will start to panic and thrash about. I just use the leash as a bright tell-tail for the one instance where you turn your head and the ig is not where he was seconds ago. I will only hold Bob back by the leash as an emergancy measure.

Before you take your ig outside read these:
Dominick's endevor with Rex AWOL for over 2 weeks and
Woohoo -- Rex returns (I can't find the first half)

I have the same hip lead that Merlin and Prism Wolf have. I didn't buy one though, I bought a pack of shoelace for $2, tied them together and took a barrel clip from one of my old jackets and it works just as good.

Thats what happens when you try to use the leash as a control. You pretty much just let him have his head and really have the Iguana walking you. I use them in case Zok decides to take a flying leap somewhere.

I made my leash as well, as do most that use them. I paid 25 cents at the fabric store for the barrel clasp and used a peice of soft cord that I had laying around.

Would a slip-not work instead of a barrel clasp?

well I dont have an iggy but I use a small dog harness on my 4ft nile monitor. he also doesnt like the feeling of being held back when he reaches the end of his lead. it tends to make him bolt in all directions.
