Out Door Iguana Cage

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to show off my freshly built outdoor iguana cage. It took me two weekends to finish, but I'm finally done and very proud of myself.
Let me know what you guys think?

Re: Out Door Iguana Cage

It looks pretty good except for two major problems.
The chicken wire is notorious for cutting off iguana toes! Also the holes are large enough to allow access by snakes and rodents that could harm your ig.
The wood shavings in the bottom need to go. Anything that they can get in their mouths, they will, and can result in serious impaction. The best thing to do with the bottom is a sheet of linoleum, tiles or just sheets of black and white newspaper. Avoid the slick color ads.

Also is that an undertank heater laying on that shelf? That needs to be put where the ig can't scratch it up or chew on it. UTHs really aren't that applicable in an iggy cage anyways. If it doesn't drop below 70 at night no supplemental heat will be needed.

Also, is he going to be able to get access to sunlight or some other form of uvb?

Other than that and the things Merlin mentioned, it looks great! You should have one very happy Ig.

Its a very nice big space. Glad you gave him a big home.

For the screening, try something called hardware cloth. It comes in 1/2 inch squares and won't cut off toes.

Re: Out Door Iguana Cage

The under tank heater is not in use I was just trying to figure some stuff out for when winter comes around, the chicken wire I used is coated in pvc so I thought it would be good, let me know what you think. Also the bedding is aspen, should I change it to iguana bark bedding or use newspaper?
As far as uv access I take her out on my lawn for about 30 min a day..... that is her favorite part of the day she loves it!

Hmmm I have never seen PVC coated chicken wire. Can you get a close up picture of the intersections of the stuff?

Good. The only problem is that if its cool enough outside to require an Under Tank Heater for the ig to lay on something needs to be done to warm the air in the cage. If the ig's body is warm, but breathing cold air, a respiratory infection is likely to occur.

Iguana bark is another of those products that should never have been offered on the shelf!
Neither aspen nor bark are acceptable. In fact there is no particulate bedding that is safe for iguanas. They just tend to tongue flick everything!
You need something that they can't get in their mouths.
Thats still a very attractive looking cage!

Re: Out Door Iguana Cage

I would recommend going down the a flooring store and finding a linoleum remnant that will fit the bottom of the cage, we did that with our old iguana cage and put a splash guard and caulked it all up, that way it could have been hosed out without any issues.

Re: Out Door Iguana Cage

That cage looks great, and with everyone's advice, it will be comfortable and safe for your iguana. I know it sucks to have to change things around, especially when you worked hard on it. I've been there. For example, I had to change my outdoor cage and install wire with 1/2' opening. But thank god I did because I realized we had some rats and snakes in the garden!!!!

Re: Out Door Iguana Cage

Leopardpython, by looking closely at your pix, is there a wire at all?
It looks like a plastic fence from home depot.
