Caymen Blue Question

Reading the Blue Recovery site they mention that the green common is fighting for (and winning over) the blue's habitat. Does anyone know what, if anything, is being done about the common green population on Caymen?

The best place for that answer is posting directly on the Cyclura site's forum. It's a very little known forum, but you should be able to get an answer. Des (whom you should know) is a mod there, I believe.

Yeah, right, I posted to Cyclura months ago to ask for help in identifying a lizard and I got no response. If Des is a Mod there, she had better get things moving. Besides, right now she's IN the Cayman Islands helping the BIRP.

Mark, my understanding from my conversation with John Binns this summer is that they capture and re-locate greens when they infringe on the Lewisi territory. They also trap other feral creatures that hinder the lewisi population growth. In fact, right now the BIRP is preparing for the release of the next generation of juveniles! According to John:

"Fred Burton reports the release of 13 female Blue Iguanas is going
exceptionally well."

Green Iguanas are a tough breed. They can usurp an area and destroy natural flora (like Florida), they can cross breed into the native population and sully the gene pool (like the Mona Island iguana), and they can quickly deplete the food supply meant for the native species (like the lewisi), but we love them anyway!

Perhaps that's why Iguana iguana is not endangered!

Maybe why it's not a very popular forum then. I don't know if Des is a mod or not. She's the only one I saw answering the posts. I had forgotten she went to the Islands.

Green igs truly are like the rats of the lizard world. But I like rats, too. I've had some for pets. They can create havvock, though and that is why Hawaii has made them illegal.

I just got back this past Friday and am still on an island high I spent 1.5 days radio tracking released female iguanas, participated in the release of the males, and spent the remainder of time working at the captive facility. Totally had a blast and am in the process of writing up a trip summary. I took 600+ photos, and am supposed to receive CDs from other folks, since I used their cameras as well. www.blueiguana.ky has "news from the field" that Sarah and I had relayed.

One of my fears for the released iguanas are large Cayman racers. *yipes*

Took pics of curly tailed lizards, anoles, spiders, bugs, and of course lewisi .. and people and more.

We tried looking for the feral green iguanas. Over at Rum Point, there used to be some but they're not there anymore -- dont know if they were forcibly moved or not. We also went to the mosquito canal/mangroves area, where there is a huge colony (as in like a thousand), however the weather was too cool, so we didn't see any. At the Botantical Park, there had been a rumored sighting of a young green iguana, but we didn't see any tracks or what not. I did see green iguanas selling for $2(CI) in a pet store when I was in town.

I don't moderate the cyclura.com forum. I only help there with the news aspect on occasion.

I'm hoping to return to GC again prior to the summer.
