Baby Cage

Hi, my dad and I have built a cage for the new baby iggy I am going to get. I saw it at the shop yesterday and it is around 10 inches long. He's pretty small.

Anyway the cage is 4ft tall 2ft deep and 2ft wide. It has 2 full levels for him to be on and a 3rd smaller shelf for him to bask on. How long will this cage last him before I have to make a new one, and how big should the next cage be?

Re: Baby Cage

Welcome to HC. First, congrats on doing it the proper way. This is a great way to start out with your ig. Too many owners try to cram an ig into a 40 gallon tank.

Here is our care sheet for Igs. It will answer most of your questions. Read it over. I know it has adult housing specs in there. Pay good attention to the diet and lighting sections too.

Welcome!

Re: Baby Cage

Welcome!

The faster your iguana grows the sooner he will need a new cage, there are a lot of varying factors that cover growth.

My iguana has a 4x4x6(tall) cage and it lasted him about 2 years.
With adult cages the bigger you can make it the better.

Have you read up on UVB lighting and how important it is to Iguanas? I highly recommend the Megaray from reptileUV. (Welcome To ReptileUV - Mega-RayŽ UVB lamps for reptile lighting worldwide)

Re: Baby Cage

I also commend you for building a proper cage FIRST. Please do spend some time checking out the links that Liz and Lacey provided. Diet and UVB light are critical, so spend plenty of time on those areas. Also, you'll probably want to pick up Green Iguana - The Ultimate Owner's Manual by James W. Hatfield, III. If you have trouble finding a copy, let me know and I'll help you locate one.

Welcome to Herp Center, too!!
