Changing Iguanas Habitat!
I'll post some pics later when its all done.
So far I put in some new logs, plants, and, well: lets hope this waterfall works lol. Slash seems a bit restless but hopefully he gets used to it quick. I also have a question How long are heat bulbs supposed to be on? I'm asking because 3 of them popped. I'm not sure if its the light holder that's breaking them or if there on too long? Update On Pics First link is the old cage, second is the new logs, and last is the waterfall. Next I will put some plants. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...4/CIMG2528.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...4/CIMG2897.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...4/CIMG2898.jpg |

Re: Changing Iguanas Habitat!
what kind of heat bulb? I think that more information is going to be needed before anyone can answer that questions. What size and kind of bulb, and what kind of fixture? Are they being moved a lot? when you say "popped" do you mean they have burned out or actually broke?

Re: Changing Iguanas Habitat!
heaters are supposed to be on as long as the temp needs to be higher than when it's off. Is it a bulb that produces heat AND light? You might want to look into something that is light less, like a ceramic heat emitter. It will last much longer, then get a high quality mercury vapor bulb for proper UVB output.

Re: Changing Iguanas Habitat!
well first it was a 100w blue light(night kind)burned out and so did like 1 or 2 other lower wattage lights.
im thinking it could be one of these 3 things... 1 the lamp isnt working properly 2 my dad opens the door and cold air comes in (maybe cold air messes up the really hot lighbulbs? 3 when the iguana climbs the mesh the lamp might shake and maybe this is causing it to break. and as for the habitat I took out all the old sticks(wich I got from trees).. and put in only 4 new ones that are from the petstore..some plants(i dk whats better, putting them in pots..or integrate them as part of the habitat, like put the dirt in the bottom floor.) and finally the waterfall is finished..actually the paint is still wet im just waiting for it to dry so I can put it inside. and I will also look into those ceramic heaters..im getting tired of lights burning out. plus I think the iguana will sleep even more confortable. |

ya I do, never had a problem with it. also how often should those be changed? because I think after a certain amount of time theyre no good..even though they will still light up.

Re: Changing Iguanas Habitat!
depending on the brand you should change it every 6 months. I think the Mega Rays will produce UVB for a year. What kind of UVB bulb and fixture do you have?

If it's a fine mesh it isn't really great for iguanas. As they grow they will either tear it to pieces or, more likely, get stuck in it and injure themselves. When you can, it would be much better to replace that with a larger coated wire that will allow them to climb more safely.

Re: Changing Iguanas Habitat!
the mesh is a metal one (its not a like a mosquito screen) the holes are about 5 millimeters.
and the uvb light is repti sun, the heat one is zoo med, the fixture is those metal clamps. also I think that with this 75w blue light he is sleeping a lot more comfortable...plus it looks better than the red ones I think haha! |

Re: Changing Iguanas Habitat!
If you are talking about that coil lamp it is wholely inadequate for the high UVB needs of an iguana. They only project UVB for a few inches and unless the ig is sitting directly under it the ig is getting nothing.
If you wish to use flourescents you should have a minimum of a 4ft 2 tube fixture. That way no matter where the ig is in the cage it is exposed to the UVB.
