Re: Carnie Iguanas!!!
We never thought for a moment that you thought the carnival was right. We are just trying to educate you on what should be done about it, and what repercussions certain actions will have. Please don't get defensive, we don't mean any harm.
I think you are missing our point. by your friend "rescuing" an iguana, its just telling the carnival guy "hey, people are buying them, I can make money, let me get some more for the next carnival" If no one would buy them or accept them as prizes, they wouldn't be there in the first place. Sure THAT iguana has a better home now, but its not stopping the guy from doing it again, in fact its encouraging him. Now the one thing I WILL bug you on... "You didn't introduce them right away." You stated your friend got him this past sunday. Quarantine time is a minimum of 30 days, 60 is better. Sunday is right away. I bet your friend didn't get a fecal and blood work to check for parasites or any other disease, so now the other ig has the chance of being sick, and very sick. I think a vet trip for BOTH are now in order.

Re: Carnie Iguanas!!!
Alright well you have a point with the quarintine. It could end very tragic for the both of them if the one she got was sick. Thats her though not me. I will defend her on buying it. I dont thinnk the carnival saw to much of a profit off selling the Iguana to her. Those guys charge 5 or 6 dollars a person per ride. I think she did more right than wrong in getting that Iguana. She also informed them on how to take care of them better. My only argument in this whole thing is that I think my friend put an Iguana, sentenced to death in a carnival into a good home.

Re: Carnie Iguanas!!!
I merely responded to statements that were made and used quotations to draw your attention to what part of the post I was talking about in that part of my reply.
You seemed to make it sound as if, since one iguana was "rescued," that what happened to all the others was of no consequense. And that the carnies should go on their way unmolested since they were no longer in your town. Since the carnival was over there, it was no big deal. Many people have gone to a great deal of effort to get this practice stopped. For good reason! To allow the practice to continue(under the wire) negates all te work that was done. As for you taking exception to my using the word "enlighten" as if you thought that it was a bad thing, would you prefer the term educate? That is exactly what I was trying to do. By your post it seemed as if you did not understand the situation as a whole and I was attempting to shine some light on it.

Re: Carnie Iguanas!!!
Alright, It must just seem like alot of you aren`t being the nicest about this. It just seems like its obvious that I wouldn`t want an Iguana to have to live in a 5 gallon tank and would rather it be put to sleep. I just don`t like either, I want the iguanas to go to homes where people are well informed and will take care of them properly. Thats what my friend did so besides the quarintine factor please don`t critisize me for thinking she did a good thing for that Iguana.
Quote Yzfracer347 :Would you rather it be put to sleep or given to someone who keeps it in a 5 gallon aquarium feeding it crickets? Merlin: Actually we would rather put a stop to it all together! And "someone who keeps it in a 5 gallon aquarium feeding it crickets" is killing it just as surely, only much slower and more painfully.

Re: Carnie Iguanas!!!
a good thing for THAT iguana, yes. A good thing for the rest of those iguanas or any future iguanas from that guy. no.
Our question is, are you going to do anything about that guy, or just let him go on his merry way? You should do something, a phone call to the SPCA is all it takes.

Re: Carnie Iguanas!!!
Yeah, I would like to do something about it. What surprises me most is how small the carnival was, and usually there are big carnivals around here but this one was tiny and I had never seen them at any of them. I'm doing research right now on phone numbers and where best to call because I would like to make sure something is done.

Quote:
Thats just it, you arnt getting the big picture. Most of these guys are NOT going to WELL imformed winners. You said there was no caresheet provided right? Then how are the winners to know what to do? They see how the carnies have them set up and will probably do the same thing. Its better they be put to sleep then to suffer from malnutrition, Metabolic Bone Disease and anything else. No one is being mean or not so nice as you put it we are just trying to make you understand the importance of actually taking a step and do something about it.

Re: Carnie Iguanas!!!
I'm sorry that you felt we all jumped all over you on this. It was very commendable that you recognized how bad the situation is for these iguanas, and also commendable that your friend wanted to get the little ig out of that situation.
Believe me, there's not a single one of us here that haven't at one time or another seen a reptile at a fair, or a store and wanted to take it home and give just one of them a chance. And if we all want to be honest, most of us have made at least one of those purchases. I know I bought my water dragon from a pet store for just that reason. When you love the animals as much as this bunch does, it happens. It's likely that we'll all make that mistake at least once. And hopefully your friend will take great care of her new little ig, thus that one has gotten a fighting chance on life. Unfortunately we've all had to face that it really *is* a mistake to do this. Because, by buying these animals, we're creating a demand, and they will keep getting more iguanas to fill that demand. It's only when that demand stops and they aren't able to make money off them, that they'll stop trying to sell iguanas like that. Which is why it's important for all of us to at least try to report situations where these animals are being abused. It may not do anything, but perhaps the authorities will eventually take action and get it stopped - which is a situation that will be much more beneficial for them. The reason why people here are all so quick to jump on something like that is not because we think that *you* are irresponsible necessarily, but that we've seen this situation over and over. I guess it's more of a gut response than anything else. We do understand the feelings you both had when seeing them and the desire to help, and we congratulate you on your rescued iguana. It might be more help, however, to go ahead and report the carnival, if you can.

Re: Carnie Iguanas!!!
We know to report the carnival. And venus your not getting the big picture ive repeated myself over and over again that this is wrong and I dont want the igs goin to people who cant care for them. I would rather them be put down then die slow deaths. In your quote I was speaking about one iguana that my friend got and how theres more positive to her saving one the the negative of the carnival getting 20 more dollars added to their pocket.
