Freya visits the vet

Freya had a vet visit yesterday. She had developed a spot over the weekend near her surgery area that seemed slightly fluid filled. By Sunday night she had some tissue that had changed, it became really dark and fell off mostly, it was like the abcess she had before. I cleaned and bandaged the bleeding wound, and they saw her on Monday. By the time she saw the doctors the bleeding had stopped, and the wound looked good. She is back on antibiotics and the doctor said she looks really good. She does keep dehydrating easily. They think she may have some problems, but we have decided as long as she is healthy and happy she can stick around here happily. They said over all she looks to be healthy now.

Re: Freya visits the vet

My Baby Dragon has the same issue with constantly becoming dehydrated,, her kidney damage is so awful that she was on meds for it for a while,, I keep a constant supply of subcue fluids. she was near death from starvation when she came in.

And yes for those who are curious I do spray her greens with water,, lol

Re: Freya visits the vet

I dont know if this is ok for iguanas or not, you might wanna check with your vet, but when I get dehydrated snakes in, I use clear unflavored pedilyte, and it does wonders....

Re: Freya visits the vet

A very good way to get fluids into an iguana is to use RepCal brand iguana pellets as a salad topper! These things will soak up water like a sponge! And most iguanas seem to love them.
Just soak the pellets in a bowl of cool water for 10-15 minutes.
Hot water will make the pellets fall apart!

Re: Freya visits the vet

Baby Dragon HATES them, lol. She will refuse to eat anything if they are anywhere near her bowl. She finally now eats a huge full bowl of food after a year. When she first came in, I was lucky to get her to eat a quarter cup a day

Re: Freya visits the vet

Freya hates anything on top of her food except pineapple juice. It's her #1 favorite. If we put it in her water bowl she won't drink it. We also give her pedialyte. She gets 2 small bottles of fluid a day beside what we put on her salad. She loves to "drink" from her bottle. It's a small bottle from the vets with the top cut down a little that her calcium glubionate was in, she sticks her tongue in the end, and it drops fluid when she removes her tongue. Kind of strange, gave the vet a good chuckle although she told us we spoil the poor thing too much. It's the easiest way to get her to take her fluids. Every now and then, she sucks too hard on the bottle and will cough a little, but then goes right back to drinking. She's a funny little thing, very entertaining.
