Re: Venom

I've read that many common pet lizards are venomous... but not to humans. So that might be what you read. Or maybe someone what referring to the "venomous character" of some IGs!

Re: Venom

Iguanas are not venomous. There are only two venomous species of lizards in the entire world. They are the Gila monster and Mexican beaded lizards.
You may be thinking of Komodo dragons. Some say that they have a venom when in fact it is the presence of bacteria in their saliva due to their scavaging habit of eating rotting meat.

Re: Venom

Yes this has been an on going discussion among some researchers.
Some of them are claiming, based on the presence of certain protiens in saliva that almost all pet snakes possess venom as well.
If this was true then there would be no reason for them to have developed constricting as a method for kiling prey. They would just bite it and wait for it to die!

Re: Venom

Venomous igs... noooooooo!

Don't even put the suggestion into their heads!

Can you image what life with them would be like, then? I don't even want to think about it!

Re: Venom

The Gila monster is one of only a handful of venomous lizards in the world. Others include the similar-looking Mexican beaded lizards, as well as iguanas and monitor lizards. Its venom is a fairly mild neurotoxin. And though a Gila bite is extremely painful, none has resulted in a reported human death. Unlike snakes, which inject venom, Gila's latch onto victims and chew to allow neurotoxins to move through grooves in their teeth and into the open wound.

Re: Venom

Dr. Bryan Grieg Fry has been doing lots of research into venom...the very famous venom doc! they have found three finger toxins in alot of "harmless" animals(Bearded Dragons, corns etc...komodos too)...something may be technically venomous...but now this needs a whole lot of explaining and order...we need to change the way we understand venom. very interesting times! There is a really good chance he is coming out from Australia to give a lecture in june(san diego, CA) which is huge! He is going to explain correct terminology for herps...and venom. finally giving us standard terminology

should be amazing. i am hopefully going to be there! Cutting Edge Of Herpetoculture
