Re: Venom

I don't disagree that iguanas are venomous. The level of venom, in any species, is what determines the safety in regards to human contact. (Which seems to be how humans clasify venoumous.)

A great example is the spider commonly called "A Daddy Long Legs". Pound for pound, they are one of the most venomous spiders on the planet. Does anyone look at them as venomous? Nope. Their "fangs" can't penetrate human flesh, so we don't consider them venomous at all, though they are extremely venomous.

Re: Venom

The Brown Harvestman which is known as the daddy long legs is not venomous at all,its a myth.Look it up they dont even consider it a spider.Just in the spider family. If iguana's was venomous wouldnt it be against the law to sell them as pets?

They sell any number of venomous animals as pets. You can go into an aquarium shop and purchase lionfish and blue ringed octopi. There are reptile expos that advertise that they specialize in "Hots".
I can guarantee you that, thanks to the internet, just about anything you would desire can be on your doorstep in a matter of days.

Re: Venom

I was actually referring to the common "cellar" spider, which is known as Pholcus phalangioides. The Harvestman and Crane fly are also commonly referred to as a "daddy long legs" but that wasn't what I was referring to, lol.

I did do some research just now to see if this has been proven a myth, and apparently it has though no clinical studies have been done on humans. It appears that pholcid venom has a fairly weak effect on insects, so the liklihood that in its current state and size, it would not cause anything more than mild irritation to humans. (That is of course the effects in its current size.)

As I grew up, the pound for pound theory was based off the same spider, except now take its venom and toss it into, say, a goliath bird eater. How toxic would its venom be then? This is likely where the whole myth came from.

They aren't toxic in their current state, and their fangs don't penetrate enough for humans to even have a feeling of being bitten.

Re: Venom

No harm taken. I actually believed it was one of the most venomous from what I had been told growing up. I researched it after you posted to confirm and indeed it comes back as a long standing myth.

Re: Venom

I too had always heard the same thing about the spiders. And that their mouthparts were too small to be any threat to humans.
