I stumbled across this in the news today:

Iguana Found Along Waimanalo Road - Hawaii News Story - KITV Honolulu

I had no idea that it was illegal to own or transport an iguana in Hawaii. Is it because they'd flourish in the tropical climate and take over like in Florida?

On that note, why isn't it illegal to own iguanas in Florida?

oh yes they are,, there are also many others creatures that are illegal to own there. It is like a paradise,, most of everything would flourish there and take over,, causing all kinds of hate and discontent, lol on the natural ecosystem.

All non-native species of reptile are illegal to possess or transport into Hawaii.
They can throw you in jail over a cornsnake!

Haha yeppp...I could never live in Hawaii just because of this fact!! But its understandable...

Huh. With most states it's the other way around - you aren't allowed to keep native species.

So why don't they have a law like that in effect for Florida and other states where "pets" are taking over the local population?

Because of the climate and paradise like island so anything would take over. Cause florida isnt like hawaii lol.

Iguanas aren't illegal in FL - yet. I have the feeling it will be coming though. Hawaii is just easier since they are a series of islands - easy to keep closed off...;-)
