Critter changing colours too!
I just noticed that Critter is changing colours and becoming quite orange on his legs, sides and his dewlap mostly. I assume it's a good thing from previous discussions I have read. What does it mean? I hope it means I am doing a really good job of taking care of him!!! lol

i think he is going into "season"
I saw an almost completely orange ig this weekend. It was odd, beautiful, but odd.

Re: Critter changing colours too!
Yes its a sign of breeding season. Be aware that at this time the behavior can change radically at the spur of the moment. Breeding seaon can turn the sweetest igs into little demons!
Be on your guard!

Re: Critter changing colours too!
Definitely be on your guard... don't allow his face too close to your face, and watch his mouth at all times!
By the way, this will probably last quite a while.

Re: Critter changing colours too!
Yeah, no more lizard kisses for a few months or you might come back short a nose. Dizzy has just started acting up too, constantly dumping his food and being really restless unless I open his cage door, in which case he just sits still, but I have to keep an eye on him.

Re: Critter changing colours too!
Oh, I know! I have never been bitten but I have been chased around the room. We have a pretty good routine going right now and he lets me pick him up to put him in the tub. I have been trying to get him to let me hold him and that's going well. I always approach him from the side and as soon as I touch him (even if I can just put my foot against him) he settles right down and then I can pet him or pick him up. Also I come at him slowly and sort of from the back. He can see me coming but doesn't act like he's being threatened. If he's really acting out (hissing, spitting, whipping!!) I don't push my luck.
Anyway now that he has his new Mega Ray light I am worried that he will be even more ferocious during breeding season than before (and he was pretty ferocious before). I wasn't really as "afraid" of him until I read some threads here (and seen pictures) about the injuries some people have incurred from their igs. I am much more careful now!! |

Re: Critter changing colours too!
It's not necessary, or even desirable, to be afraid of him, just be aware, cautious and careful. Animals can sense fear.
And keeping a broom nearby to push him away from you if he gets too rowdy is a good idea. Not to hit him with but just to push him away from you if necessary.

Re: Critter changing colours too!
I used a stool and a rolled up towel once (items of convenience) and my boyfriend about died laughing saying I looked like a lion tamer from the old cartoons...he didn't appreciate that I was saving him from some nasty welts or worse! (Now I use a hockeystick to poke him back into a safe place if he's having a rough day.

Re: Critter changing colours too!
Don't be afraid of him. He'll be able to tell and it will make him more nervous and volatile. Just make sure you have something with you that you feel will protect you. Sometimes just having a towel to throw over his head, or a pair of gloves nearby changes how you approach them. The more confident you are, the less scared he'll be.
After Don Iguan bit me, I was a little over cautious. It was becoming a problem, so I bought myself a thick pair of gloves and wore them while working with him. It didn't faze him a bit, but I felt safer - like even if he did bite me, it wouldn't be so bad. It really helped. Now he's back to being a sweetie. I'm not going to let him fool me this time, though. ![]()
