Blue Iguana?

When I first made some posts about my new Iguanas that I was told were "El Salvadoran Blues", Some questioned if there was really a "Blue" Iguana.
Here are some pics I found of a "Cayman Island Blue Iguana"

Now, I Know that my animals are not this species. Mine are still babies, but they're supposed to gain just a pinch of bluishness later in life from what I'm told. I Know the person selling them to me is honest. I've seen a more mature animal that is a foot long, not counting the tail, that has these traits.(But not nearly as blue as the cayman)
But Hey, Even if they stay a vibrant green, It doesn't make any difference to me. They weren't trying to sell two different types of Iguana or charge extra for the blue.
They just had a batch in that happened to have that name.

But in the end, Yes there is a Blue Iguana.

Re: Blue Iguana?

The Cayman Blues are my favorite Sclera species. Beautiful animals, and I love the red sclera!

Steph I think you mean Cyclura.
And yes the blues are absolutely gorgeous.
And very much in danger of extinction!

Re: Blue Iguana?

Most of us knew there was a blue iguana. Unfortunantly, we knew that yours was not one of these.

An iguana exhibiting some blueish coloration is not uncommon. There are various shades of turqouise that some iguanas will retain. These are not "true" blue iguanas however. Its just a retained color from when they were a hatchling. If the species is Iguana iguana, you have a "green iguana" regardless as to what coloration it is.

If you had a Cyclura lewisi, then you would have a true blue iguana and would be housing an endangered species.

Hopefully Des will see this thread and will chime in seeing as she works with the Binns (John and Sandy) and the IRCF.

Re: Blue Iguana?

Juvenile Green iguanas from El Salvador are often bright blue as babies, however they lose this color as they get older.

this was taken from Green Iguana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I thought might be worth having a look at.
I dont agree completely with all they say though.

Umm, I believe this has been my point all along.
If you'll read my original posts, I talked about "Blueishness and Aqua coloring". Blueish, Aqua, Turqouise, Teal, they're all the same to me. I believe I was originally trying to describe an Iguana with "Blue Highlights"!
