new rescue

While sitting home sorting through various items that need a place so the reptiles can take over more area, we received a phone call about an iguana sitting in the middle of a road. We got in the car and hightailed it to an area about 45 minutes away (no one wanted to pick it up). When we arrived their was someone in the yard nearby and it was in the grass. We stopped and asked if he was the owner, he said yes but we could have the iguana. First thing we noticed was dehydration, starvation and Metabolic Bone Disease. Took her straight to our rep vet and they checked her over well. She is missing the majority of her tail and if she lives will probably have to have some more amputated. She has many broken bones especially in her tail area. The long bones in her legs appear ok at this time. She is currently being medicated, UVB light exposure, and warmer temps (this is michigan and she was being left outside loose all of the time). She gobbled up the first greens she was given, then seemed to tire out. She is currently home with us.

Poor girl. She really does look terrible. Hopefully she'll live and from now on have a happy life.

Re: new rescue

that makes me absolutely sick! What is wrong with people. That tail looks as if it needs to come off more. When is your vet going to do that,, I am just concerned the infection in it will spread even farther and cause more problems for her.
Good for you for helping that poor thing,, please keep us posted. Did you get any subcue fluids for her, for her serious dehydration, I would probably have a reptile panel done on her so you will know how her kidneys are functioning.

some of my favorite type of people,,, you know the ones that are so self absorbed that cant be bothered with actually taking care of the animal with the attitude of its just a lizard. I would definately call animal control, and file a cruelty report.

Re: new rescue

that's pitiful, especially THIS time of year. if it's cold in Alabama, god knows it's cold up there. if I had an iguana, i might take it outside from time to time, but in the proper season. I'd love to have one, but unfortunately dont have the room right now. I'll stick to my anoles and turtle, and maybe a leopard gecko later on. Good luck with your rescue, keep us updated on her, I hope she pulls through for you.

Re: new rescue

The vet said she wants to give her two weeks on meds and proper feeding, uvb light, and heat. Then she will look at amputating more of that poor tail. The vet is kind of hoping a little more of it will come back towards normal. Her tail is broken in so many places, but the long bones in the legs are not broken as far as we can tell, and neither are many of her ribs. She has a bit of a snotty nose at this time tho. She is so fragile the vet said a small cage with room to turn around in only for now. She is very hungry all the time, so we are feeding her small amounts frequently, as her stomach can't take too much. The vet said she will get most of her water through her daily soakings, which we are doing in a warm electrolyte bath. Last night she drank so much of her bath water, that it was running out of her mouth! Her mouth actually looks pretty healthy inside (she has shown it to us)! She doesn't appear to have any abcess in her mouth. Today after being warm all night she is a little perky for short periods. The vet says the turning point will be if she makes 2 weeks.
She is 7-8 years old in spite of her small looking size. The guy said they got her as a baby.
