Re: begining cage

Here's the excerpt from the caresheet for iguanas on cage size:

http://reptileguides.herpcenter.com/...157.html?t=157

Baby iguanas grow very quickly. An adult size cage will probably be needed within a year.

Re: begining cage

Are you talking about the 30 for the iguana?
There is no formula of watts per gallon. If you are talking about for heat it will just depend on the ambient temperature in the room. It will take some trial and error to determine the correct wattage. If you are talking UVB lighting then you need two tubes that will cover the length of the aquarium.

And you are wasting your money building that small of a cage. It won't last the year. Young iguanas grow incredibly fast!

Re: begining cage

yea I have a 3 week old green iguana ina a 30 gallon aquarium tank and I currently have exoterra sun glo and night glo of 40w my question: is that good enough and for uvb lighting can I use one of those in the attachment 10.0 uvb or the other like 60w? the temp in the room is like 70-80 and the winter is coming so the heat will be on which will help too

Re: begining cage

do you have a thermometer in the tank? if not you need one. What is the temp reading when it is on? if its too cold, you need a stronger bulb. If its too hot, you need a lower wattage.

In my frog tank, i try to maintain 80 degrees. I do this by swapping between a 40 and 60 watt bulb, depending on what the temp in the house is. Right now the house has been quite warm and I haven't been turning the AC on at all, so I haven't needed the heat bulb on. I suspect in the winter since we keep the house pretty cool I will need a 75 watt bulb. BTW this is about a 90 gallon enclosure. I figured all this out by trial and error.

Re: begining cage

Truly - even a 30 gal. is not big enough for a baby ig. It's not the size for the ig, but it's the size of the aquarium not allowing for the different heat gradients in all three areas. Some years ago a rehabber I know performed the temperature gradient testing on several different sizes and the 50/55 is what she came up with.

As for your choice of UVB - there is a warning that comes with this brand of compact. Most reptiles have been fine and no reports with iguanas yet, but babies may be more susceptible. Take a look here and read the latest report:
UV Guide UK - Ultraviolet Light for Reptiles - UVB reptile lighting on test

Babies do grow very fast. You could easily have a 2' ig by the end of the first year...;-D

Re: begining cage

The "Sunseeker" is a brand which I had not heard of before so I did a little snooping. They are worthless! The price should give it away. You won't find a decent UVB mercury bulb for 16 dollars!
