please some advice with taming
PLEASE.......some help with how to start taming my new iguana.Yoda is all over the place when I stick my hand down in the cage.I go slow and talk to yoda almost baby like, lol.Still yoda gets very wild when I have to stick my hand in there to do anything.I just went and bought the Iguana's book for dummie's.I tried to find the book that some of you suggested, but could not find one.Went to 3 pet stores none had that book.Is the wild behavior normal with a baby ig?Will it settle down with time and am I going about it the right way?....Thanks....

Re: please some advice with taming
I no longer have an Iguana, but it is the same for all reptiles. Meaning that they don't like to be approached from above. As babies they are all prone to attacks from birds. Try feeding from tongs to get him to come to you. As he becomes comfortable with that try feeding from your hand. Once that's okay with him try having him walk across one hand to get the food in the other hand. (if your enclosure permits this) If he's comfortable with that. You should be able to slide a hand under him. Always better to slide your hand under than to grab from above.

Re: please some advice with taming
How long have you had him?
If you haven't had him long, he may also be stressed by the move to your house. Even if it's been a little while, you still may want to try moving him to a quiet, out of the way place, and not try to handle him for a little bit.
Also, you might make sure he has someplace he can hide out when he feels scared. That will help to calm him a little.
He will never be fully tamed, but he will stop freaking out when you go near him if you are very patient with him.

Ive had him for about 5 day's.I know thats not long enough, lol.I was concerned about him freaking out is all.I didnt know if maybe it was signs of a sickness or something.Yes he has a place to hide actually 2 places.I have him in my living room, but i'm going to move him into my bedroom.Just until I can get his enclosure built.Hopefully by then he has calmed down somewhat. This is my first ig,I just want to make sure I do all I can for him. Thanks for the advice, this forum rocks.

Re: please some advice with taming
Patience Patience Patience....move slowly and deliberately, and only bother him for now to do general clean up like changing his food and water.
It will be a long process, there are still days 3 years after getting Diz that he doesn't want to be messed with. Over time you will learn to read his body language.
Just understand that there is no shortcut to a tame iguana, it's a lifelong process. Give it time.

Re: please some advice with taming
Our local Petsmart stores carry the book in question, Green Iguana the Ultimate Owners Manual. You can also go to one of the chain book stores like Barnes and Noble, or Borders, and they can order it for you.
And the iguana freaking out is perfectly normal.
At this stage of the game it thinks you want to eat it!
In fact I always get concerned when I read that someone has just bought a baby ig and says it is the most lazy docile creature.
9 times out of 10 THAT means the iguana is ill!
It is just a matter of patience. This is a wild animal and a reptile. It will take time, sometimes as long as a year to gain its trust. But when you do it will be worth it.
