Also keep in mind that not all "tubular" lights are UVB lights. If it says "reptile light", "full spectrum", "UV", "UVA", or "basking light", you can bet it's ****. If it doesn't specifically say UVB, then it's not UVB. And as Rich mentioned, a fluorescent UVB *will* work, but only for a few months and they have to be really close to the iguana.

Re: Heating pad DIY??
Alot of lights that they sell in pet stores that say "full spectrum" blah blah blah. They aren't. They are no different from a normal lightbulb. I only have a baby ig, but I used the "repti glo 5.0" bulb, which is fine for my little ig for now, but you MUST get your iguana a source of UVB. If not, it could die from metabolic bone disease, because UVB is how the ig absorbs calcium from its food. Also, bottom heating pads are not a good idea really...I do have one in my tank for my little ig, but it is VERY low temp on, and its mostly helping with the humidity. I'm still new at all this, but I do know what Iguanas suffer extreme burns from warming from the bottom, because they don't realize they are getting cooked, because like someone else on here said, their heat receptors are on the top. Get yourself a higher wattage bulb to produce more heat for the basking area. It should be around 90-100 degrees.

Spike gets sun directly.
I have a big sliding door that stands open during most days so it is unfiltered..
I am going to get a ceramic emitter today...
Its quite strange that these pads burn so seriously cause the one I have warms about the same as an electric blanket does not even hot just warm..
Thanks for your input guys..
Spike is two this August..

Re: Heating pad DIY??
Just make sure its unfiltered, and that should be fine for at least the summer months.

The problem is not so much with a properly functioning pad but one that malfunctions and overheats. The can happen more easily and quickly than you think.

Re: Heating pad DIY??
Does the cage have glass or screening, or...? That would filter the UV. (Sorry if I'm being dense. )

Re: Heating pad DIY??
If the cage is glass, she's not getting any UVB, and if the cage is screening, she's not getting as much uvb as she would out in the open, but my UVB light for my ig is through a screen, so that is perfectly fine, i believe. (im no expert here...)
