i got an iguana!

ok my dad went out to buy my sister an iguana instead of a dog cause they are easier to maintain(yeah right!) ok that was a dumb move because as I started reading iguanas need more care than a dog and since a little girl cant take care of it then I will be (im 16 close to 17).i got a couple questions from all these photos I see on the net all the young ig's are very limeish green but mine is a more dark paleish gray green.(well not that much) ill put a pic up later.i just wanted to know if this is normal?do colors vary?this was the 'last iguana' at the pet shop so my dad just got it.(bad move again)then I went on to read on iguanas habitat and such, for now I got a 50 gallon aquaria since it didnt cost us a penny,i know I will be building a 6 ft cage before it grows into a 3ft ig.i just wanna know what might be missing from this stuff I have bought from the pet shop,i did some reading before i went out to buy the stuff,i still think im missing some stuff though.
heres what I bought....
iguana leash(the comfortable one that doesnt go around the neck)
fluckers clamp lamp.
zoo med repti temp rheostat
fluckers repta vines
fluckers thermohydrometer
zilla power center
zoo med repti cage carpet
zoo med repti hammock
zoo med repti therm undertank heater
exo terra sun glo 150 w bulb
40 gal aquarium(temporary till it grows)
spray bottle
water bowl thingy
food bowl thingy
heat rock(yes I know theyre bad,we bought it before the cage and stuff im gonna cut the cord and use it as a rock.)

is the stuff I bought ok?what am I missing?what should I buy?i think the only thing missing is another thermometer and a uvb bulb.which uvb bulb do you recomend?what else do I need?anyways any other good iguana sites out there, i know of iguana den and the iguana pages.whats the next step to take?(yes ive read but some more advice is good) right now the iguana is in the stage were it is adjusting to surroundings.i havent touched it much.thank you !

Re: i got an iguana!

Post some pictures when you get a chance, and we'll help when we can. Ask anything, chances are someone here will either know the answer or be able to find it in no time.

When you say greyish, is it like a brown/grey, or like a dark grey, mine was brownish at one point due to temperature changes, but once the stress went down and he found his basking spot he lightened up again. I had a scare with a dark grey and it turned out he was just shedding, I was a worry wort for a long time and I still am at times.

Another good site just for iguanas is greenigsociety.org, they have a lot of good info also, and a lot of the same people go to both.

Welcome in and it sounds like you are off to a good start.

Re: i got an iguana!

Thanks for the warm welcome.yes I am very involved in all my hobbies like to read as much as I can,i was putting of the money towards a new guitar, but this came up.ill post pictures of the setup,so you guys can tell me if theres anything wrong with the ig or setup.the color thing is hard to explain its green mixed w/ gray basically.this ig has been in the house for 3 days.(sadly 2 days in a hamster cage with a heat rock, but I moved him.as with his diet, ive been feeding it what I have around(good stuff) but I will be making a trip to the market to get him something more balanced.im having a bit of problems w/ lighting ,first of all do u guys reccomend leaving the heat pad on only at night?and the lamp for 12 hrs or leaving the light 12 hrs and heating pad all the time?second is a mini pool a good idea?would it increase humidity by alot?how do I manage the temperature?with the rheostat?im a bit confused on the temperature issues and basking spot,i was thinking bout making the hammock the basking area.i will read the data sheet, even though ive read alot!im sure ill pickup new info Thanks!

Re: i got an iguana!

Welcome to HerpCenter.
as Steve said when you get into something you do it in a big way!
Pick up a copy of Green Iguana, The Ultimate owners Manual. It will get you started off right.
As for the color it is possibly stress from the new location or it could just be dirt and accumulated stains. When iguanas are at importers they are crammed together in small spaces and so can get pretty dirty. When I first got mine it was a dirty brown color and after a few days she shed and was the normal bright green. Regardless of how you do it the temperature is important. What exactly is confusing you?

Re: i got an iguana!

I battled with the temperature in my frog tank for a good month. I had a UVB bulb/grow bulb for the live plants, a regular house bulb for heat, and then a blue bulb for nights at a lower wattage.

Now that the house is warmer because of spring, I no longer need the night light and have downsized from a 60watt bulb to a 40 watt bulb to keep my tank at the right humidity and temp.

I find that misting daily keeps the humidity right where I want it. I know an iguana tank is much bigger than my frog tank, but maybe something like that will help. The idea is to keep half the tank warmer than the other, and keep your temps around where the care sheet says they should be. How you go about it is really up to you and what works best for you and your iggy.
