College Life with an Iguana?

Well I don't think College Life and Iguana can go into the same sentence with the iguana and yourself getting proper care. I will be graduating next year and then going to college. i am going to being going to Vanguard College in South Edmonton. I am taking a School of World Decipleship course where we will be going on many trips out of town. Which is no good when you have an iguana. Too much travelling might stress him out too much. So luckily I have an Aunt and Uncle that loves animals and will take care of him till I am out of College and settled into my own place. which will be about 5 years, but at least I will get to visit him as much as I want. well when I am not at school that is. It's awesome that I was able to find someone who will take him and I can rest easy knowing they will take good care of him. Now I just have to figure out a way of getting his cage into their house. well at least I have a year to figure it out. lol. anyway just thought I would post something since I haven't in a while.

Good point. Something that everyone should think about before getting a pet (of any kind) is whether their lifestyle in the foreseeable future will support keeping the animal under appropriate conditions for the lifetime of the animal. I'm glad for you and your iggy that you have a solution that will work.

i agree. I will be going off to college in 2 1/2 semesters. (WOOHOO) senioritis has started early for me lol.

Anyways back to the topic, i have a large number of animals to take care of, but luckily for me I will be going to a commuter-only college for my undergrad biology degree. I just have to figure out what im going to do when vet school starts....oh well....one step at a time I guess.

But anyone who is at that age 15-18 needs to seriously consider what they will do with their pets once they go into college BEFORE purchasing them.

Even those of us who are, umm, I will just say "a tad older," should think about this issue. Lots of things can happen in life (new jobs, marriage, babies, losing a job/house, retirement, etc.) that can interfere with our plans. We can't plan perfectly for everything, and stuff happens, but I think it's important to think about those things we CAN think about, before we bring responsibility for an animal into our lives. Some people treat animals as disposable "accessories," and it makes me sooo mad!

Ah, well, I'm afraid of heights, so I'm stepping off this soapbox, lol.

Very well said!! And just to note I am only a "TAD" older than the 15 to 18 mark.

This is something Sean and I took into consideration also. He realizes that he will not be able to take all or any of his critters off to college. So they will stay with Mon and Dad until he graduates. That's ok, I've willed my Torts to him after my death. LOL

Very good points. With the wealth of information on care available today these animals are living longer and longer. You have to remember taht the cute little lizard or snake you are buying may live 15-20 years or even longer. Some of them may even outlive YOU! So its a good plan to have arrangements made for what is going to happen in that event.
If not your beloved pets may simply be destroyed.

You can't always predict what happens in your life, but I think what's important is what you do when your life does take an unexpected turn. In my opinion, when getting a pet, you need to make sure you have a back-up plan in case you lose your job or end up moving or something, but you can't necessarily let the fear of having something like that happen keep you from getting a pet whatsoever.

There's a big difference in my mind between the people who are about to make a big life change and get a pet they know they won't be able to care for for long, and someone who's had a pet for awhile and their life changes unexpectantly. The former is being irresponsible, while the latter is just handling a situation. That's why I find it gratifying when someone who's had this happen goes ahead and finds a responsible home for their pet rather then mistreat it.

But I fully agree that most people getting any pet don't do the proper research into how long their pets will live and how much care they need. Even cat and dog owners are often guilty of this. If people would take a couple of hours and look into what they're buying or adopting, the situation would be so much better for most animals.

I did a few years at college with an adult iguana. Not easy at all and I don't recommend it. It is doable but you will be more broke than the average student and have to re-design the cage from the ground up so you can move it when you have to go for break.

It has been do but a ton of stress.
