What to do with an Iguana during a power-cut??
What is the best thing to do with your Iguana when there is a power cut. As yesterday, the whole Murcia region (my part of Spain) was down. So his light or his heat-mat couldn't come on. And I picked him up, he was freezing, and it took a while in my hand for him to heat up again. Obviously this is not a good thing, so do you guys have any tips on keeping them warm during a power cut.

It really depends on the temp outside. If its decent and I don't plan on the power being out long I shut off all of the fixtures and cover all of the cages to prevent heat from escaping.
If it is going to be a long term thing I have a few place I can take them that are not on my power grid (work, boyfriend's etc) or I can put everyone out in the living room near the wood stove. If you experience frequent power outages it might be a good idea to get a generator.

It was raining yeaterday and it was windy, so the temperature was really low out-side.
The whole of my region was down yesterday, so I couldn't of taken him any-where. I covered the top of his tank with a load of blankets. And held him in front of the fire for a while, which warmed him up. They are not frequent, so there is no point in me getting a generator. But when they do happen, the lights are out for about half a day. |

When we had our power outage I put Zok inside my sweatshirt while I looked for someone near that still had heat.
But she was still small then! Check sporting goods stores. They have hand warmers that hunters put inside their gloves and will stay warm for several hours.

There are smaller things you can do, too. Seal off the room from the outside - make sure edges of windows and cracks are taped up. Move the cage or animal to a point farthest from where cold air would be coming in. Cover the cage with blankets, or things to keep it insulated.
For an iguana, if your water heat still works, a bowl of water, as hot as you can get it, under a covered cage might be helpful as well, as long as you make sure to change out the water once it grows cold. If you have a fireplace, or some candles you can light in the general proximity, that might help as well. A better solution, though much more expensive, is to buy a small backup generator. You can hook the animal's lights or heating pads to it and keep them going for a few more hours to a few more days, depending on the kind you get. Many people use these for refridgerators and freezers, but they might last even longer only powering a lightbulb or a heat pad. Edit: never mind, you already said you didn't want a generator. Sorry, I missed that.

No, the hot water or heaters wouldn't work. We have gas heating but it uses electricity to pump the water around. So the water idea is a no-go.
I don't think that putting him inside a jumper would work, as he is always trying to escape, and unless he was asleep I would lose him within the first few minetes. I can cover the top of his tank, but the sides are a no-go as there a few ventilation holes on the sides, and I didn't think that it would be a very good idea to cover them up. What about if I boiled a load of water, put it in the bath, waited for it to cool down a bit, and then put my Iguana in the water??????? Would that work????? |

No the water would be too warm. However if you have plastic contaners (soda bottles etc)you could put heated water in it and put it in the cage and cover it up.
