Well it is impossible to tell with a baby iguana. But when they are 1 1/2 to 2 yrs old, it is easier. The males get larger jowls (cheeks) and the females have more streamline head. The males also have a row of pores under the rear thighs that are very large and stick out on the males and are small and almost not there on the females. Males can also have a hemipenile bulge at the base of the tail where a female will not....hope this helps...

Or you can take him to a reptile vet and have a DNA test done. But honestly, at this point it really doesn't matter... except for the curiosity factor, of course!

When the time comes, you'll know... trust me!

Ohhh...but it does matter, Steph! I know you know this... .

Dian_Wei~ This way you can prepare yourself for the wonders of breeding season behavior of the males (which can be agressive)..or the behavior changes of the females during the gravid months (which means you need a nesting box and extra calcium).

For the preparation factor... indeed it does. My thinking here is to focus on good care (diet, light, heat, humidity) so that we can keep this baby healthy and ready to enter that first season in peak health.

Dian_Wei, find yourself a copy of this book: Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual if you can. It will really help you in caring for your iglet.
