back leg harness?
Hi. i have a 3-4 month old iguana he is 15 inches long and I was wondering if it was better for me to get him used to a hind leg harness now or later? i had done some research and have learnt how to make one off of this website but was wondering if it was wise to start training him with it now instead of when he was older. are they like dogs and cats, by which they are harder to train when they are older? if so I would like to train mine so that he is tame around new people which shouldn't be hard cause my mom teaches piano and he see tons of people come and leave my house all the time. but would it be wise to try and train him on a hip leash now? thanks in advance chris.

If you are gonna start him on a harness, then now is better than later....it takes them a while to get usedto it........

I also should point out that you do not train an iguana the way you would a dog or horse. You more or less just get the ig used to things. It will most likely never walk on the leash the way a dog would. The leash is more of a safety line in the event the ig gets spooked and bolts.

Remember that your iguana is a wild animal, it may not take kindly to a harness and freak out and whip around and hurt it self, the harness is just a secondary method to reduce the likelyhood of escape, not to walk him on. I would start now and put it on him but don't put any pressure on the eash, just so he knows its there and slowly work your way up to being able to take him around people.

I wouldn't. Just put the leash on and let the ig wear it while you are handling in the house. Igs generaly poop while in the water and then you have a soiled leash to clean up as well!
The point where most igs have a problem with the leash is when they reach the end of it and feel resistance. In their minds this means that something has caught them and they are in danger. This usually results in a croc roll and they end up wrapped up in the leash. This is why a hip lead is safer. It isn't wrapping around their neck!
If you start out slowly and work your way into it you shouldn't have any real problems.
