Miss Zaks tail

Well I have been so busy lately, I do not think that I told you all about Miss Zak falling from her shelf and breaking her tail?

Well about a month ago Zak started acting very aggressive and not at all like herself. Jon and I called Dr Corwin and he said to bring her in so we did. She had dropped 1/2 pound sense last year and she had a spot on her tail that was oozing a clear fluid. I thought that she had gotten it caught in the door of her cage and hurt it and that is why we took her to Dr Corwin.

Anyway, we got her in and he did a smear of the fluid and there was nothing to be concerned about. There was no infection, but just above that place, her tail was discolored as if it were bruised. So Dr Corwin did an x-ray and found that she had broken her tail!!! And that she also has arthritis of the spine that fuses the bone together so that they do not bend any more. Doc said he had never seen this type of arthritus in a reptile before and that it is very rare.

Well he put her on antibiotics and pain killers and we modified her cage so that she can no longer climb. She is 14 years old this month. We took her back to Doc Corwin this past week and her tail has healed nicely.

she is back to loving self and eating very well once again. So to make a long story short.... LOL If you have an elderly iguana and they are not getting around as good as they used to, you may want to consider lowering or removing climbing shelves do that this does not happen to them.

Sorry for the long long post.

Aww, a broken tail and arthritis doesn't sound too fun, but I'm glad she's doing better Good thing you caught the artthrtis too or she may have injured herself further.

I'm glad to hear Miss Zak is doing better. I don't know if I'd ever heard of a reptile having arthritis, but knowing what and how it is I can understand . I wonder how many more do that never get diagnosed.

Well i'm glad that she is feeling better and that she didn't lose her tail! Update us with some nice pics of her newly redesigned 'senior' habitat when you can!

Glad to hear her tail is healing Debbie.

I hope the arthritis stops spreading. Do they make Iggy Jazzy chairs? LOL

Glad to hear everything is going well with her tail....

I also have an older girl....she is slowing down day by day, still eating and everything...but a lot slower compared to the other girls. She is 12 or 13ish...and very sweet. I may have to look into another cage for her eventually...so she doesnt have to climb about.....best wishes....
