Iguana Adoption
I had placed the Iguana we had gotten from school on craigslist to try to find him a new home. I got one reply and I phoned the man back. This guy had no idea what was involved with iggy care. "He was getting his girlfriend a birthday present". I tried to give him the basic information I know on iggy and bearded dragons as he wasn't sure which to get her. I also to him to google Herp Center. I really hope he looks into the care needed before he gets any herp. OK guys we all need educate a bit more about herps, this was really scarry.

It's a constant battle, Colleen. All we can do is try. The problem is that a lot of the people that reptiles appeal to most are also the people least qualified to actually take on the responsibility of caring for a reptile.
They don't care what it needs to survive,.... it just looks cool!

I've run into the same thing many times, iguanas are very hard to place. I've even dealt with one lady who wanted to rescue iguanas because she once had one that was real nice, but died. She had no caging and no lighting because she said she didn't believe in them. All I could do was shake my head and walk away. She had no concept of what dealing with a problem iguana can be like.
And honestly, I've come across a lot of creepy, ignorant people on craigslist's pet section, you'd be better off advertising it on herp-specific forums.

Yeah alot of people just want a 'cool' pet and don't realize how expensive they are...especially if they are listed as 'free' they think "hmmm...a head of lettuce is cheap, so if I feed it once a week then it'll be super easy...."
I've got a little iguana that I am trying to rehome right now but you can't hardly pay people to take them, and people who are qualified to keep them know that they don't want them because they are so much work!

I recommend listing him here on this site and the Green Iguana Society Adoption List. The GIS have a very thorough section on "Are you prepared to own an Iguana" and "Before you adopt or rescue" for perspective adoptors. They will take applications for you or you can have applicants contact you directly. If you have them take applications, they review the applications and give comments before passing them on to you but you still have the final say. I got Mr Iggy (now known as Huff) from their list.

I agree with Marie, GIS is a very good site for adoption, they are extremely thorough.

I agree. too many people end up getting an iguana without looking at the cost of them and think they are easy to take care of. i was one of them. i thought they were cool and that all u needed was to water and feed them and provide them with the proper enviroment. i was wrong they are lots of work. but I don't regret getting one. and I am doing all I can to make sure he is properly cared for. i am thinking of getting another herp but not until I get everything set up for the one I have now and until I am out of my parents place and graduated with a good job.
