Greetings

Well first let compliment all in a great web site. I have been easedropping for the last few weeks and I found everybody here to have valuable insight to be shared by all. Well I just did it!! after reading a few books (including the Ultimate lguana), visiting countless shops and more than 3 months of studying (or hesitating!!) i purchase my own little green monster!! Hard to tell his age but probably in the vasinity of 8 months (snout to vent length around 5 inches TL around 15 inches). I have the space to build him a nice playground, probably will copy the one in the Ultimate iguana book. I live in canada so I need to wait for summer months to work up outside all the carpenting needed. For now he resides in a 2X2X2 vivarium with all the works. I know it is small but it is temporary. Now I taught I knew alot from all the reading but face with the actual fact I seem a bit incompetant!! First he is one feisty little devil!! He's been home for two days and I am not sure if I should just leave him alone or start socializing him right away. At the store he was quite wild. After two days I am able to pet him inside his habitat after not much of a battle. He tried to be a big Macho man by extending his (quite large actually) dewlap and bluffing by giving me a nice smile with teeth witch I ignored and picked him up anyways. As soon than I held him gently he melted like butter. So I think there is somethong to do with Mr Wild one!! i am just not sure if I should keep it up or just give him a week or two by himself.

Also he seems to be not eating , any suggestions on this??

All in all he is a handsome devil, nice greens with a lot of blue shades in his face, first time I see one with such blue highlights. Does anybody knows if this is a geographical characteristic from his country of origin and can I do something to help him keep such gorgeous colors.

Well I hope to contribute to the board but for now I am just too GREEN to give advice!!!

Best regards

Michael

Welcome to Herpcenter Michael. Congrats on your new addition. i would recommend letting him adjust for a week or 2 prior to really handling him all that much. he needs somewhat of an adjustment period. Just make sure your lighting and temps are fine and he should be eating soon. Keep us posted.

Welcome Michael and thanks for the compliments! I'm glad to know that you did your research before taking the plunge. Makes things MUCH simpler.

I would go ahead and continue with the handling for short periods. Might as well get the ig used to being handled. The not eating is typical for an ig (or any reptile) that has beeen moved to a new location. Takes them a bit to get settled in.

Greetings Michael-

Welcome to HC and thanks for the compliments. We sure do appreciate that.

As far as color goes, it is indicative of the origin to some extent, the rest is simply genetics.

And there is little we can do to promote color with husbandry. AS they grow, their color changes and they lose some of the vibrant colors that they had when they were young. Hopefully, yours will be one that keeps the vibrant color for a longer period than most.

Enjoy your time at HCN. We're glad you're here.

WElcome Michael,

Sounds like you have it down with your new little green baby. It is definitely normal to not eat at first...I would wait until he is eating before the handling begins. Let him settle in his new home first. Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions. Lyn

welcome to HC karmichael.

These first few days are the most stressful to your new ig. give him another week of no interaction other than to put the food bowl in and clean the cage and stuff. then start to handle him like crazy every day you can.

good luck!
