How to STOP your ig from pooping in a certain place.
Ok, it seems now my ig has decided on a new place to poop again. I've been handling him and hanging out with him right in front of the heater where it is really warm, and he would poop after handling on the floor level, where I place him. This would be his huge load of the day. That's all fine and good. Then he's climb up.
Then I'd leave for work, and when I come back, he always poops a little smaller load sometime during the day. In the past, he's done it in the floor level, which is fine. Always on the floor without fail. Then, he started doing it in his food. Really nasty, but I can at least clean it up and wash the plate. Now, for two days it has decided to poop on its basking platform. I have, reluctantly placed newspapers there, because it pooped on the wood and the urates all soaked in. It was the same exact place both days.
I know it takes time to toilet train the ig, but in the meantime, I just need to STOP it from pooping in that spot as it is obviously bad for him to stay on his platform (no exercise) so much instead of climbing down to poop and also it makes it almost impossible to clean. What is a good way of doing so (stopping it from pooping in that spot)? Should I put something there to stop it?
It is NOT the temperatures being too cold as I thought at first. The temps were a little colder last time but today I deliberately raised them and it had no effect on his pooping behaviour whatsoever.

He is probably smelling the poop and like so many animals it triggers him to poop there. With the wood not being sealed it is going to be almost impossible to get the smell out of it.
If the shelf can be removed from the cage You can try scrubbing it with a good antibacterial soap and rinsing it very well. If the shelf cannot be removed try wiping the area down with vinegar. If it can't be removed you are going to be limited to products that are safe to use with the iguana present.
There is a product but it would probably be available to you by ordering online. It is produced by the company Natural Chemistry, Called Healthy Habitat. It is an enzyme type cleaner and deodorizer that is safe to use inside the cage.

I was told by a fellow herp owner that lemon juice was the thing to use for scrubbing the wood. I'd like to confirm this.
Also, if I leave some poop where it should poop, will it tend to poop there then? because it can smell it? Perhaps I leave on stool from its morning poops for a day or two?

one more thing, the water pan there right now is pretty much useless. It never goes into the water. When I try to place him in there, he jumps out all in a frenzy. Today, he almost stumbled in there himself and he hopped right onto the edge, leaving with only one foot in the tub. IT's largely a waste of space.
He has another smaller drinking bowl and also a humidifier. I am thinking about emptying the tub, is that a good idea?

Whether or not to remove the water tub is up to you if it isn't needed for humidity. You might also reduce the water level in there to about a 1/2 inch. maybe the depth is freaking it out.
My iguana has had a water tub for years. She is tubbed trained so usually it goes unused. Occassionally she uses it when I have to be away and can't tub her. And sometimes it just goes on the floor! Depends on her mood of the day.
The lemon juice is worth a try. It can't hurt.

Alright it seems to have settled into a pattern of pooping on the basking platform in the afternoon as today it did it again. I do make sure he poops on the floor in the morning. I find that he poops right after being sat in front of the heater for a few minutes. But he poops again during the time Im at work and I don't know how to deal with that. Please assist.

Could my setup be the problem? He doesn't have a log to climb down, but rather grids that spiral down shelf after shelf (about 4) to the ground. He never climbs it like that though he just climbs the walls of the enclosure. Don't know if the vertical climb is more taxing and it is lazy because of that?

You might try givng him a branch that gives more of a direct acess to the ground.
If I remember right you are feeding twice a day? Try just one big feeding in the morning and see if it helps with the multiple poops.
One nice thing to look forward to. The adults generally only go once a day.

hi all im new to this forum. i used a link from reptile forums where I am a regular to get here in search of an answer nobody can provide there.
here goes .
My 8 yr female iggy tends to defficate in her water bowl/bath which is fine as it is emptied everyday for fresh water, BUT recently when she roams she will just do it ANYWHERE even AFTER she has been in the "bowl". i thought at first if she does the bowl ill leet her out but no!! out she comes and does it anywhere then casually strolls back into her home. any help or ideas would be great as it is becoming a problem now and I dont want to leave her inside all day but the only alternative is re-homeing im sad to say

Re-homing is not the only alternative. Have you taken her to a vet? It's very possible she may have internal parasites. This can cause frequent pooping. It's very easy to fix and not very costly. If she is treated for parasites, the meds used will also kill the beneficial bacteria in her intestines. The microflora in her gut will need a boost from one of two products: NutriBac which is designed specifically for reptiles and amphibs which you can order online, or BeneBac which you can get from the pet store for birds, but is approved for reptiles.
To find a vet in your area that treats herps...and igs specifically...go to one of these sites:
http://www.herpvetconnection.com
http://www.arav.org (click on "members")
http://www.anapsid.org/vets
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
