Igs & Mirrors
Ok, I got a question for ya guys.
When I was doing all my researching and learning about Igs before I got mine, I saw it mentioned quite a bit about Iguanas not liking mirrors, that males may get aggressive towards their own image and attack, etc.
Now when my Big Boy comes out to play, most times he walks right into one of my daughter's rooms (the one that has the floor length closet mirror doors) and parks his butt in front of the mirror and is completely content to just sit there staring at himself. He's never tried to be mean to the "other" Ig, he just really seems to like staring at himself. So I put in a mirror in his enclosure, first on the lower shelf then recently moved up to his basking shelf where he likes it better. And he's just happy as a little clam.
So does anybody else's Igs like/dislike mirrors?

Well Sampson my previous male despised the mean nasty male in the mirror. He would fight it violently. Huff now I don't think he knows what to do yet. At times he will shudder bob at the lizard and other times he stares in wonder at him. I guess time will tell.

My guy loves the mirror so much that on the way into the bathroom to be pooped every morning, he makes me stop in front of the bathroom mirror so he can check himself out before going in the tub, lol. And of course I do the whole baby talk routine and tell him how handsome and cute he is and he just nods, "yup", lol.

Well Huff is in his rebellious stage right now. I can't compliment him. If I tell him he is a good boy he wiil quit doing whatever I wanted him to do. I sometimes think he perfers being called uncomplimentary names.

Dizzy could care less about the mirror, he's bobbed at it twice I think since I got him.
Taz, when I still had him, would charge the mirror and shudder bob at it until you threw something like a towel over him and moved him. (I wasn't about to just pick him up and say, "let's go, nothing to see here")

Kira, I have to advise against putting a mirror in with your male. He may be fine with the "other" ig right now, but you have no idea at what moment he'll no longer be fine with it... he could wind up breaking the mirror and cutting or ingesting the broken shards.
It's always better to play it safe with these guys.

Thanks for the advice Steph, I see your point about him possibly changing his mind about the "other" ig, but not to worry, it's a plexi-glass mirror in a frame. The worst he could do to it is pull it off the wall and knock it down. It's only held to the wall with some hot glue (for easy removal). It can't shatter or anything. No way was I going to put something in there that could be dangerous. If he does change his attitude towards it, it'll be removed immediately, but for now he just seems to love it so.

Hee hee. Nothing like having a vain Iggy. Right now I have two iggys in a 50 gal breeder tank until the weather warms up a little and they can go out to the rnclosure in the screen room. We're in Florida! I am going to have to get a background for the glass as the tank is right in front of a window and when it gets dark Bubba sees himself andthe flaring and bobbing starts and then if Babba comes near he gets a little aggresive. Then it's time to shut off their light and say goodnight!

Kira I agree with Steph. I would remove the mirror. While he may not be demonstrating any outright hostility it could still be a stress factor. His lack of response may mean that he sees the "other Ig" as a more dominant individual and is being still so that it will not attack him. This stress could affect him physically and leave him open to illness.
