Leazard is Hiding

So for the past week or so LeaZard has been hiding allot in his cover and not basking. I have checked the temps and they look good (see image).

As you can see there is a good gradient (I think), but he keeps hiding in the areas marked on the pic. Do igs do this sometimes where they don't want light/heat? I understand they are cold blooded, but he seems to not want to bask at all. Also he has been coming out when the UVB is off and heat is on and eating then.

One more thing. I know igs are habitual creatures and don't like change. So how do you deal with modifying the habitat to satisfy their requirements but not to disturb them?

Thanks for the help

PS the green and blue round things are food and water.. there is also water in the left hand hide

Re: Leazard is Hiding

What is he hiding under? What kind of decor is in the tank? What size is the tank? Iguanas like a basking spot of 95 to 100 degrees. I wish I could tell you why he is not basking. What's the humidity level?

Re: Leazard is Hiding

Well he is hiding under a couple of black plastic hides I have in there.

That is the cage without the hides in it and I have put a foil emergency blanket around the whole cage to keep in the heat and moisture. Is it possible that that is too bright for him with all the reflective surface?

What is that substrate you are using?

Re: Leazard is Hiding

That's a nice looking setup. Is that sand in there though? Get that out.

Re: Leazard is Hiding

Mine did the hiding thing at that size. I supplied him with a hiding box where he could get in and sleep in. That's normal for one at that age. He did that until he was about three years old. It gives them a place to feel secure in.

Re: Leazard is Hiding

He really should have a horizontal basking shelf that he can use to get his whole body under the heat/uvb. Having it at an angle keeps them from being comfortable and prevents even heating.

I agree, there needs to be a level branch or platform in there for it to bask properly. Are you using wee wee pads as substrate?

Re: Leazard is Hiding

Thanks for all the replies. There is no substrate. It's paper and the horizontal sleeping area is what I was asking about the changing of the habitat part of my original post.

Re: Leazard is Hiding

That little bit of furniture rearranging should not bother him to much, it may improve his behavior.
