Re: Leazard is Hiding

Wee wee pads are puppy pee pads that are used to train puppies to go in a certain spot, it's part of house breaking puppies. The average size is about 22"x22". I like them because they have a plastic back and hold a great deal of liquid. The one male iguana that I have can defecate a large amount of poop and water, the wee wee pad absorbs the water part of it, which makes it easy to clean up without having to handle wet paper and have it drip everywhere. I use these when I travel, I just place one in the carrier and hit the road.

Re: Leazard is Hiding

Maybe my ig is weird, but he seems to like it when I rearrange his cage, as long as I keep some of the same stuff in there, if it's something new he will look all around it, look to see if he can eat it, climb on it, and what have you.

Mine actually doesn't use hides, he doesn't even have one in his cage anymore because he seems like he doesn't like them that well, soon he will get another one though. I just have to find something big enough.

He may not like the foil blanket, that would be bright with the lights on.

Re: Leazard is Hiding

Iguanas will seek cooler darker places for several reasons. One reason will be normal thermal regulating. The iguana knows when they have enough UVB and heat to actively digest their food and will seek the alternate area to "balance out". Some iguanas will seek darker cooler climates when they are sick or not feeling well. This can be troubling, but only if the iguana refuses to leave this dark area. If it chooses to move back and forth between the light/heat and cool/dark, it is probably just regulating its body temperature. Last, an iguana may choose an uncomfortable hide over a comfortable basking spot due to overstress. The iguana is just so stressed, it seeks the hide, not caring if it is best for it or not.

I think your young iguana is probably just acting normal. I would however do several things:

1) Remove the reflective blanket. Shiny, reflective things surrounding him will not make him comfortable.
2) Move the hide to a higher level. Sometimes the hid can be right next to the basking area, just sheltered from the light and heat. A mid-level hide is probably best.
3) Reduce the light/heat extreme at the basking area. Iguanas like UVB and heat, but it does not have to reach 90F all the time. Anything above 70F will keep the iguana out of danger. If the heat is too high, the iguana will not choose that spot and you are defeating the purpose of the basking area.

Good luck! I hope it all works out for you!

Re: Leazard is Hiding

ok so new info .. he is sheding off his head now... I moved the heat lamp over the basking area and the uvb is over food/hiding/open area. He has still been eating and it seems that he is out more since I moved the lamps. Oh I did remove the reflective blanket also... it's alot less bright in there now.
