What a Nightmare.....
Well if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any at all.
I am going to have animal control breathing down my throat tomorrow. One of the laborers that works for us sometimes will help me with the iguanas in here. Well, today I had Amadeus out for his daily poo in the bath, he is in breeding season, about as orange and nasty as they come. Well, only if you are male, he loves me, lol. Well Amadeus hopped out of the tub after he was done, as he always does. He was right behind the bathroom door as I keep it closed when he is in there, because he gets out. I was busy with Alexis, and was going to get to him right after I was done with her. Well this genius of a man decided to do it himself before I even knew what was going on. Well, he went in and cornered Amadeus in the bathroom and Amadeus came out like a raccoon. Needless to say he bit him in the face and took off a good portion of the tip of his thumb. It was pretty bad, takes the cake over any time I have ever been bitten. I put Amadeus back in his cage and took him into the ER. He had to have several stitches in the face, and the tip of his thumb is hideous, he has to see a specialist for nerve damage and all that stuff.
Here is the icing on the cake, I told him many many times to NEVER touch Amadeus, as he has issues with men. My hubby won't even go anywhere near him. I have made it clear so many times I lost count, he still takes it upon himself to go in there, and look what happens, ughh.
Here is the great part, protocol for animal control is to seize the animal and hold them for a week. Now, I do not know if this will apply to me as I am a rescue, but I cannot see the laws being any different for me, than for anyone else. The hospital took the report and all will be forwarded tomorrow. I am so furious! Animal control is not set up to house iguanas properly. I also have an issue with Amadeus being punished for being an iguana acting normally in breeding season! If they decide to put him to sleep I will have a serious issue. I know I have the right to court and all that stuff, so it looks like I will be calling my lawyer in the morning. I also will not hand him over until they get a warrant. I am not trying to hide anything as those of you who know me here will know that. I just do not feel he should have to suffer because of someone who has BIG MAN COMPLEX. You know the "well if a woman can do it, then I can" syndrome. Not that he ever used a brain to research why Amadeus only loves me at his time of the year, lol, because I am a woman. He just had to be a tough guy, and for that I fear Amadeus is in real danger. How many people corner raccoons? lol. It is no different.
I know some of you are thinking if my homeowners will cover it, the answer is yes, but that is not what I am worried about right now, I am really afraid he will be euthanised because of someone else's stupidity.
I will update tomorrow when I know more.

Re: What a Nightmare.....
Maybe you should have people that help you with your animals sign a waiver that they know the risks and you are not responsible for any injuries.

Re: What a Nightmare.....
I would think that the fact that you have repeatedly told the man to leave the animal alone, and yet he willfully refused to obey your orders, would have some bearing on the situation.
However the fact that what, in the eyes of the law, is a potentially dangerous animal was loose and unattended may override that.
And contrary to what many believe, signing a waiver is meaningless.
A good attorney will rip that to shreds! All that does is verify the fact that you knew that the iguana was a hazard and allowed it.
This could get really sticky.

Re: What a Nightmare.....
This sucks I hope the best will work out...as for my thoughts about the helper guy...maybe I should keep that to myself. Believe me, if you told me about an ig that was in season I wouldn't even think of going near it!
The ig is totally not at fault here. Gosh I hope for the best for that ig.
Good luck, Nicole.
Great idea about the waver, Marsha!

But he wasn't loose. He was locked up in a bathroom. That guy went into the iguana's space. She had even told him to leave the iguana alone.

Re: What a Nightmare.....
Good luck with everything. I hope for the best for Amadeus.
So I'm not really clear -- is it just the formality of the animal bite/ER informs animal control issue or is your "helper" planning to sue?
Keep us posted.

Re: What a Nightmare.....
Well, I just got off the phone with animal control, and they have no protocol for reptile bites. He laughed and told me he would let me know if he heard anything. He agreed that if you are told to stay out of somewhere that you probably should, lol.
I was informed that if he is required to take him he will be housed at a vet that has all the proper equipment, so that does make me feel better. He told me it could also take a while since he went to the Navy base to get his stitches, so it has to go through the Army vets first, before he gets the report.
So, basically it is wait and see.
I hate waiting for answers.

Re: What a Nightmare.....
Hopefully it will go nowhere. He is not going to sue me, I am not worried about that.
You know the part that just gets me, I have another volunteer that comes in here. He is older, retired, and a really nice guy. He also has the sense to know to leave Amadeus alone when he is in season or just being a butt.
He has been here for a few months, he comes about three times a week, I have actually learned a lot from this man. He has more patience than I have ever seen anyone have, lol. He has also adopted one of my red tails and 1 iguana. What a perfect home for both of them. He has no issues when I ask him to stay out of one of the cages, he just laughs and says something to the regards of " oh his highness is refusing service". Not this, Oh I am a man I must conquer this iguana because, I am a tough guy, lol.
You should also see him with Wing and Prayer ( my nasty redtails) they love him. They never hiss, strike, or anything. I pick them up and it is instant wrestling match to try to keep my face in one piece, lol. I sit there and watch him when he takes them on the back porch, it is absolutely amazing, it is like they have bonded with him. I know they say snakes do not bond but it is interesting to watch. It is very touching to watch, I cannot explain it. He is just a very calm, older gentleman, who is so in touch with them.
He would have adopted them but cannot afford their constant vet care, since they are notorious for getting sick a lot. However I think I may offer them to him with the stipulation that I will pay their vet bills when they are sick. I mean what is the difference anyway, I pay them when they are here, lol. Besides, Wing and Prayer hate me, lol. I think their life would be so much better in his home. They are so peaceful with him.
Okay, now I told you all about my FABULOUS volunteer, why do I get the ignorant one who thinks he knows everything, ughhh! Lol. Here is the kicker, the man that got bit is 11 years older than I am, so you would think he would know how to use part of his brain, lol.
