re: Aggressive Iggy

Time, time, and more time. It takes a lot of patience to get one to bond with you. Sometimes up to a year.
Tell us about how you are housing and feeding her. Iguanas are complicated animals and there is a lot of really bad infomation about them floating around!

re: Aggressive Iggy

What merlin said. Welcome to the board. A month is NOTHING for an ig to get used to its surroundings. Its still settling in to its new home, much less wanting to be nice to you.

re: Aggressive Iggy

Tell us about your cage and other husbandry.

Now take a deep breath, what I am about to tell you can be disheartening. Iguanas require an amazing amount of time before they will even tolerate you. Hours a day for a year or more, and if you slip and stop the taming process for any extended amount of time you are right back at square one.

Start by just being in the same room as the iguana, once the iguana is comfortable with you moving around open the enclosure door and allow him the chance to 'explore' an iguana proofed area.

Also pick the iguana up sometimes and if she doesn't squirm put her right back down, but if she freaks out keep a hold of her. She is trying to train you to put her down when SHE wants down, not when you are done with her.

re: Aggressive Iggy

In iguana "taming" you also need to be very confident. You are the one in charge, not the iguana. If the iguana doesn't learn this and doesn't respect you, you are going to have a hard time dealing with her. Do what it takes to give yourself that confidence. If you need to, wear long sleeve shirt and/or thick gloves when dealing with her - especially if she scares you right now. If you feel safe, you'll project that with how you handle her, and it will come across to her. In turn, she'll be less nervous about what your next move will be, and she won't be as inclined to tailwhip you or bite you.

Firm but gentle handling with confidence also helps to convey that there are some things she won't be able to get away with. Once she begins to see limits, it'll be easier on both of you.

But like everyone else mentioned, it takes time, time, time, more time, and even more time than that. And a *lot* of patience.

Keep in mind, too, that healthy iguanas never truly tame. They become much more docile and predictable once you begin learning how to read them, but they are still wild animals. They will sometimes act out unpredictably. You have to be on your toes and keep an eye on them.

re: Aggressive Iggy

Also given the fact that your iguana was already a year old when you brought it home, it already has "social issues" that you'll need to work extra hard to overcome. It's very likely that it wasn't cared for properly, and it may have even been abused which leads to even more mistrust of humans.

Proper diet, light, humidity, etc., will help keep your new baby healthy (please do tell us about all of that), but TIME is key for having an iguana that you can handle.

We're glad you found us, and we're here to help you along the way!

re: Aggressive Iggy

Welcome to HC!
An iguana is a big investment, but if you ask all the iggy owners on the board, its well worth it.

I don't have an iguana, but I did recently aqquire a hatchling Colombian Black and White Tegu. Just like with any other tegu or monitor lizard, its all about trust, but at the same time, You have to be in charge. Especialy with a lizard that may get to be the size these guys will.

I'd also look into getting a good book on iguanas, Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual seems to be onew of the more commonly listed boks here.

re: Aggressive Iggy

Sounds like you're doing very well.

The diet definitely needs some work, but it looks like you're trying to find the right greens. Remember that any lettuce, iceburg or not, will not contain enough nutrients to be a healthy staple for your iguana, so you really need to find a steady source of collards, mustards, dandelion greens, endive or escarole to use as staples. Even if you need to order them online. The other things you're feeding her, like the cabbage and broccoli should be supplemental.

I'm sure with some time and effort, you'll have a wonderful little companion on your hands.
