Is this food ok for iguanas? |
| This is what our member has to say: Ok, never heard anyone talk about it before:
OATMEAL
High fiber, low fat, not overly high in protein, certainly no higher than rep-cal pellets.... |

Well it is a grain and should be only occassionally or a treat. It should not be fed dried. I would cook it with only water--no salt. The thing is the amount you cook will be too much. You would need to eat most of it yourself to give him the little bit he could have. Old oatmeal is yuck IMO.
I perfer using soaked wheat bread. You can tear the amount off you want and keep the rest in the refrigerator. You can try soaked oat bread instead.

Iguanas eat fresh food no meat. We recommend the following:
75% greens
10% mixed vegtables
10%friut no citrus
5% oats
Must be cut up smaller than 1/2 the size of the head many iguanas swallow their food nearly whole.
We also leave iguana pellets in their cage all the time.
Be sure to give the iguana vitamins .
If you want to see the edible natural foods please go to our website.
FYI there are different opinions on iguanas

One opinion we all agree on:
Iguanas do not masticate their food, so ALL iguanas swallow food whole! LOL The more we chop it up the easier it is on their digestive system.
Anthony- Why oatmeal?Won't kill them, but not the best for them either. If she likes it, it would be moe like a treat, nothing substantial.

Hey Dominick,
I know it isn't a good staple. I wanted to explore oatmeal because
1) I wanna feed a bigger variety of foods. We can't get all the different veggies you list here as you know.
2) He seems to love breads, and oatmeal is similar to bread, but lower in phosphoros, but also in "flake" form. When he won't eat, I have to soak bread, smear a small amount of bread onto leaves edges and once he bites on it he will eat the mouthful. But thats really yucky so I thought I can just sprinkly oatmeal onto leaves and wet them with a sprayer. A lot simpler.

The problem with dry oatmeal is that it will absorb moisture from your ig. You'd need to soak it before feeding.
I LOVE to eat oatmeal, but somthing to thing about when feeding an iguana is that there are times that the oatbran catches in your throat. I have to do quite a bit of hacking and coughing to get it down when this happens. If it happens to your ig when you're not around, there is the potential for problems.

Well that problem is under the bridge now as he won't eat it anyway apparently. He wants bread... so he'll have to wait for that once a week treat.
