how much do your iggys eat daily?
I was making Pele's dinner today and it occurred to me that I have no idea how much a adult iggy should eat. she rarely completely cleans her plate.
Today she is eating mango, parsnips, yellow pepper, carrot, green beans, rose leaves, dandelions and of course her Romain. It's her favourite thing, and couldn't not give it to her, she gets it on the bottom of everything, as a reward sorta, lol. it was about 2-3 cups of food, once all was grated and chopped, not including the lettuce. How much do your iggys eat daily? I just have to throw in my excitement of waiting for our first SBUVB from reptile UV!! WOOOHOOO!!! I can't wait to get it! I assume once she gets that thing she will probably eat more, too. |

You should try mixing in some collard and mustard greens...much better for her than the romaine. I've found that iguanas that I have rescued the have been addicted to lettuce have switched over to mustard pretty easily (easier than getting them to eat collards anyways)
When I still had my adult male (snout to vent length 18in) He was eating about 4 cups of coarsely chopped greens and veggies each day. But some days he wouldn't eat at all, and others he would eat everything so quickly that I would give him a 2nd helping, so it's hard to say. As long as she is a healthy weight then feeding her just enough that she has a little left over is a good idea.

My rule of thumb for how much to feed my ig is to get a feel over a few days of how much on average it eats, and then give it "too much". THis is because it is hard to tell how much it will eat on any given day. Sometimes it would eat double the amount as normal and I have to feed it again at night, sometimes nothing at all. By giving it more than I expect it to eat, I can make sure that he doesn't end up having too little.
It all depends on the individual ig. Just like humans you can't really say how much a human eats right? because some people eat a LOT and others eat a little bit. |

I would love to give those things. Everytime I go to buy her food, I bring 10 page print out from the green iguana society that includes pics, and the list from on here. None of the grocery stores carry the right things for her.
I am going to speak to the produce manager at a local grocery store this week, to see if I can have some things ordered in. If that doesn't work, I'm hopeful that the health food stores can order the collards and mustard greens in. I bet that she would love them. I know it's the leafyness of the lettuce she likes. I once found endive during last summer, she ate it like there was no tomorrow , but I have seen it since.... |

Definitely talk to the produce manager; perhaps make an arrangement with him to have 2 bundles (or however much you'll need) of each collards and mustard delivered on a specific day, that way you'll know they'll be there for you on a regular basis.

If you have an ethnic market close you can also find many good foods there. Romaine should be weaned out of the diet and replaced with those healthier greens. You have an excellent choice of the veggie part, she just needs more greens. Something else you can add. If you have a Wal-Mart they have a large selection of the bagged greens. Not the giant bags of collard greens and such. Those go bad to quickly and tend to smell bad when they do. Go for the smaller salad blends. Some feed Spring Mix, but better still is the "Santa Barbara" Blend. This contains Escarole, Endive and Radiccio. All very good additions along with the greens you are trying to find. I also add a bag of Robert Redford's "Herb Blend" for added variety. There's some good stuff...mediocre stuff...and occasional stuff mixed in, but it adds to the variety.

great prismwolf! I have never thought about them! I am sure going to take a look next time I go into the grocery store, which I think is wednesday. We thank you so much!!! I think that if any grocery store will order the greens in, it would be the Quality Foods. I think I will be going past there tomorrow, or Wednesday. I want the romain gone too. Today she had a huge helping of dandelion's, thanks to the kids, and since I now know they are huge along the fence in the backyard, they now have a new chore until wednesday, hehe.

Well I would continue to add the dandelion greens even after Wednesday. At least until they start to get prickly and go to seed. They cost me $1.99/lb in the store. Also igs like the flowers. My Huff adores the dandelion flowers. He seen this big round yellow sticker on his MegaRay ballast and kept trying to eat it for the longest time. LOL

The dandelions do not go prickly here
I didn't know she could have the flowers, I kept telling them NOT the flowers, doh! Well tomorrow she'll have her first taste. Is grass bad for her? She ate some of that today too, when I took her outside... |

Yes, I give them the flowers instead of fruit. Well I worried about the grass but the vet said it wouldn't harm them to eat a little--only add some fiber. I'm waiting for the hibiscus to bloom. You do not use chemicals/poisons in your yard? My landlord/neighbor has iguanas too so I don't have to worry about that in our yard.
