Hard Foods

I keep hearing that most people here are supporters of Rep Cal food. I was just wondering how ExoTerra stacks up against it. I'm lookin to switch Jake from Kaytee, that his previous owner gave, and am looking for the best I can find. So any thoughts on both Exo and RepCal, would be great! Thanks

I'm a fan of fresh foods myself, I have used pellets that came in with rescues just as a filler, but I always add some water to soften them up first and help keep hydration up.

Fresh salad is by far the best. I am one of the Rep-Cal users on this board but only use it soaked to help carry water into my iguana, I don't want it hard (dry) when eaten as that dry part will only require more water during digestion. When I say I am a Rep-Cal user I only add about a spoon full of dry pellets, soaked as I prepare the salad, to a heaping dinner plate of dripping wet salad.

I also use a small amount of RepCal daily as a supplement--I don't use any other supplements (except NutriBac df). It adds some extra nutrients. When soaked it helps with hydration and regularity. Also because of the color and smell it acts as a appetite stimulant. The reason I started using it is because my iguanas became ill causing them to be anorexic. It was recommended by a very successful rehabber to help with their appetite and keep them hydrated.

Me too! The basis of my iguanas diet is fresh greens and veggies.
The soaked pellets (RepCal) are just a supplement.

Pellets are great to make sure your ig stays well hydrated. As for brands I haven't seen anything that says brand X is better than brand Y.

Yep, I feed him a good choice of greens and veggies as well. Just needed to see what I should use for his hard food. I think he's likin it better wet the way I do it, as opposed to how his ex-owner did. Basically, before I got him, he ate mostly Kaytee hard food with a few veggies at night. The hard food was always there for him to eat. So I'm slowly balancing him out. I appreciate the tips ! Thanks

I also have found that soaking a small amount of pellets and adding them to their fresh greens and veggies has improved their health. Once a week I will use the NutriBac. Since I have been doing this routine all my guys have increased in all activities.

Just make sure to check the ingredients for any kind of animal protein or animal protein by products.
