Iguana Garden
I've been thinking a lot about this idea. In spring, instead of planting my usual flowers and such, I was thinking about planting all kinds of yummies for the iggies. I have some space, enough to do collards, mustard greens and maybe some endive or watercress. Can't do turnips, I hate 'em and won't eat the tuber, so it'd go to waste, plus they take up too much room. And I have some trellis space that I could do snow and snap peas again this year. And maybe some edible flowers as well.
Has anybody here grown an iggie garden before? Any tips or suggestions? I've grown veggies before, but have never attempted any greens. But with 4 ig mouths to feed, thought I'd give it a go this season. I like to start my seeds indoors, early, so they get a head start. So I'll be starting seeds in the next couple weeks. Any input would be appreciated, I'd love to hear about any other iguana gardens and/or growing experiences. What was successful, what wasn't, etc. Thanks

Collards are slow but around thanksgiving they are huge.
Rabbits love collards about the only things you can effectively do are fence, little bits o' lead, or trap. Squash is fun to have in there, don't bother buying seeds just plant the ones from the common salad. As are grape tomatoes though more for you to snack on. This won't save much money if any at all more of a project to have fun with. Something like Miracle-Gro will help immensely. Don't forget to check and correct you soil. ![]() This was my garden in St Louis two summers ago. About half the space was used for squash and half for greens but never got greens to grow.

I've never had what I can consider a garden, living in apartments and all, but I plan to start one whenever I get a house, so I've read a lot.
I'm pretty sure most lettuces (endives and watercress) are winter veggies, at least down here, they wilt in any type of intense light. The greens are all a good idea, I think they take a long time but are easy to care for and not too demanding. I don't know if the cabbages are clumped together with the greens as far as requirements but I'm pretty sure it is all about the same for greens and cabbages such as bok choy and escarole. Herbacious plants are very easy to grow from seed such as parsley. You sound like you have more experience than me but you might want to check out the book "Organic Gardening," i'm pretty sure that it goes over enough to setup a pretty extensive organic Ig garden year round. |

Thanks for the tips guys.
Hey Cody, Love your avatar, Punch Bowl Falls is beautiful. I even painted a trompe l'oeil window in my living room overlooking that scene. Also painted the logs as well. Here:

Thanks guys.
This is what I do for a living, I paint murals. It's fun, lol. And don't mind at all about the background, thanks.

An excellent place for help with an iguana garden can be found here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ExoticPetsGardening/ The people here are fantastic about helping figure up large ground gardens, and smaller indoor gardens, too. And not just for igs, but for other exotics, as well. And I'm with everyone else...that painting is great!
