How much to feed
Ok, the iggy in Sean's classroom isn't being feed very well. From what Sean says it get food about once a week. Yesterday she gave it a melon ball and it took about 20 minutes for it to chew then it spit it out. The teacher ask Sean to bring in some food as she though it was getting sick. Ok last night I put together a care package (collard, mustard, squash etc) sprinkled it with Calcium and send it in the morning. Sean said it was eating and really enjoyed the collards. Ok now to my question. Can some one give me in cup(s) size how much a baby iggy should eat? When I say it before Christmas it's body was about 6-8" long (not including the tail). Ok so I'm going to make up one more bowl of food but I need to know how much to send in.

Colleen this iguana is being seriously mistreated! An iguana that size should be eating at least a cup of greens EVERY DAY! And most iguanas love melon. If it took 20 minutes chewing on it it means that either the ball was way too big for it to get hold of or the iguana is sick!

Thanks, I guess I send around a cup of food each day. On Friday and Monday maybe I should send in more as it stays at school over the weekend. We have a four day weekend coming up, I really feel sorry for him now. I'm going to tell her he's our over spring break. What's one more cage. I'm adding additional calcium on the food anything else?

I think if it is an animal that required feeding daily, someone should take it home on the weekends....ie the teacher if its in her class. Thats just not right!

That's just terrible. How can people feed an iguana once a week and not see that is wrong and they are getting sick/malnourished?
Gotta be fed fresh foods everyday.

Hello,
If the iguana is not being fed properly, I highly doubt the enclosure is of an appropriate size, that the heat gradient is accurate, and that the iguana is getting the appropriate amount of UV, if any.
I HIGHLY suggest you have a wander over to the school and check on the ig to see if everything is being done properly. You may want to also hand the teacher a link to our caresheet and Iguana Articles.

Rich
The enclosure is huge (I actually though a little big for the iggy), I know it only heat source is an over head light. At Christmas when it was sent home with someone the student didn't know that it needed a light only used it part of the time. I think I'll send her HC's links. I think taking the Iggy was an impalse move and wasn't though out. If you have a pet at school you must be willing to take it back and forth every week. I was thinking of putting together a frog tank for school next year, I know I would have to have a set up at home for weekend and vacation use.
