How well do igs accept rep-cal food into their diets?
I'm thinking of getting the juvenile Rep-Cal iguana pellets for my baby iguana, but they are quite expensive over here in Hong Kong and I don't want to risk the same thing with the alfalfa pellets that I gave it (not eating them at all, and not eating at all when the alfalfa pellets are mixed with greens). I would think that they probably taste better and the bright colors would attract them to the pellets. My ig was fed only greens when he was in the pet shop, and I finally got it to start eating other veggies like beans and peppers yesterday which it refused at first. Wonder if Rep-Cal is quickly accepted by most iguanas?
Oh, on the subject of alfalfa. It seems like a very good addition but he just won't eat them crushed, soaked, mixed in other things, any which way. Do you think that squeezing fruit juice over it will make him like them? What kind of juice would be best? I've also thought of getting the alfalfa hay and trying, as they look more like plants and he may accept them more readily. But I heard you got to crush the hay before feeding, which defeats the purpose. Is this so or can you just feed the alfalfa hay directly? Perhaps soaked wet? Yes, I do know the difference between alfalfa hay and alfalfa sprouts. I know the latter is not good. |

Well my iguanas loved the soaked RepCal Adult pellets the first time I gave it to them but I have heard a few say their iguanas didn't like them. I think it is the fruity smell and the bright colors. Igs seem to respond to colors.

rep-cal is a good nutirtional supplement and has many vitimans and minerals. I recently started using it and my ig loves them. It just depends on you iguana's individual taste perferences.

Be SURE to soak Rep-Cal before feeding! Never feed it dry.
Igs usually gobble it up and poop will increase in frequency and volume as it "lubricates" the digestive system.

Mine went right for the RepCal and gobbled it up.
As for feeding the hay,... don't. The only part of the alfalfa you would want is the leaves. The stems are too woody. Try mixing the alfalfa pellets, crushed, with pulpy fruit like mango or papaya.

Another problem with the hay is that you have to very careful when buying it. You need to make sure that it has been stored indoors and that there is no mold in it. I know from bunnies that moldy hay can cause the poopies.

Hey Dom, do you know the mechanism by which Rep-Cal lubricates the digestive system? Does it have some kind of oil in it?
My ig is having problems pooping right now. Poops once only every few days. Should I feed it a probiotic? |

Replover the "lubrication" factor is due to the amount of water the pellets contain after being soaked.
