Banana Trees

My dad has Banana trees in his backyard, and he feeds the leaves to his goats and sheep, they love them.. I was wondering if they would be safe/healthy iguana food as well. I looked around the net but could not find any information on that specific plant.

Re: Banana Trees

I wish I could help you on this one. I am not an Ig owner, we have quite a few experienced Ig keepers here that could help, I'm sure one will be along soon. I looked in the Reptile Keepers Handbook, by Susan Barnard (the best book for reptile keepers in my opinion) and there is no reference to banana leaves in any of the composition appendixes.

Re: Banana Trees

We have a few banana trees here too, and so I was curious about this question too.
I did an exhaustive search online, and even spoke to some friends at UC Davis.
I couldn't find a definitive answer.

sorry I couldn't help you!

Re: Banana Trees

I would be VERY careful feeding your iguana anything from outdoors. You don't know what kind of pesticides or chemicals have made their way to the leaves. Even if your dad doesn't use the pesticides or fertilizer they can come in from other sources. I would just stick to the recommended diet on the care sheet...
