Question on Diet.
Alfalfa pellets..should I feed those in a powder and is this necessary?
And what about citric foods?..should they be fed at all? in a website I read that lemon peels are a great source of calcium for iguanas, maybe this shouldnt be fed in large amounts but a little bit might work. so can citric food be fed in small amounts, and should lemon peels be fed? what about other types of peels..like oranges, tangarine, limes..etc. i guess someone will want to know this info as well so here is what I feed my iggy. Collard Greens and Watercress make up the most of the everyday salads. treats-hibiscus flowers, bread, and dandelion flowers and leaves. the rest I mix as much things as I can find in the fridge ( this makes up for a smaller part of the salad) carrots, parsnip, rose petals, hierba buena(sorry I dk how this is called in english..its kinda like mint), parsley, spinach, peppers, sweet potato...and some other things I may find. |

Re: Question on Diet.
Peels? I don't know about that, why not supplement the food with calcium powder?
I buy my alfalfa from the health food store, its in powder form. It makes it easier to add to the salad because I found the pellets didn't soften very well for me. I feed citrus fruits as a treat, they say that they can be irritating, but my iguana will bite your arm off for an orange segment.

Re: Question on Diet.
Spinach is another thing you want to limit. I'm not sure about the peppers. I've never fed them to mine, but he's pretty picky. Bread should also be more of a treat, I think.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend relying on citrus peels for calcium. There's no way for you to properly monitor how much calcium he's getting out of them. A better idea is to buy a powdered calcium supplement, and consult your vet on how often he needs it.
