Re: Iguana food

Yes, many of use use adult RepCal. We deem it the best choice in pellet-type foods because it does not, like other brands, contain fish meal. Before feeding any pellet, you MUST thoroughly soak it. Failure to soak pellets can cause dehydration as the pellets draw moisture from the iguana; however, soaked pellets actually aid in keeping hydration levels up because of the large amount of water each pellet absorbs prior to ingestion.

Re: Iguana food

You are using that as a supplement to the greens I hope? The best food you can give them is fresh greens and veggies with some fruit, and a little of that stuff as a supplement.

Re: Iguana food

Actually yes. They told me at the store to mix it with veggies. I was thinking that I could work toward the point where it would be their primary food source.
It says on the container,"Small slices of fresh fruit may be added occasionally".

Re: Iguana food

would YOU want to eat pellets as a primary food source?

You could ask the same thing of dog and cat owners.

I use the RepCal as a supplement and just to change up the diet mix from time to time. I would not use it as the sole source of food.
Many of the packaged reptile foods claim to be "the complete diet" and "all you need to feed". My problem with this line of merchandising is that these foods have not been in existance all that long and as such there really hasn't been any history of long term use to know what effect it would have.

Re: Iguana food

Yes, I am also a dog and cat owner and all they eat is dry food. Except for treats.
It says to moisten the pellets. For all I know Iguanas might find it irresistible. I don't know that's why I'm asking.

Re: Iguana food

Merlin's right: it's best as a supplement. Gil does get it daily, but only about 2 tablespoons on top of a huge (about 3 cups) stack of green, squash, and a touch of fruit. I use it daily to aid in hydration, but I wouldn't dream of JUST feeding RepCal pellets.

We're glad you're asking.

Re: Iguana food

Can I add my agreement to that as well?

I use it as a supplement sometimes, but never as the sole food source. Iguanas might be able to survive on that food, they might even like it at first, but if that's all they were to eat, there would be absolutely no enjoyment after awhile. Iguanas need variety in their diet, just the same as we do. That's why a mix of different greens, squashes, and a little fruit is recommended.

Also, I can't imagine that it's completely healthy for them.
