Re: Iguana food
So far I've been giving them fresh spinach, carrots, and yellow squash grated through a cheese grater. I then dust it lightly with a calcium supplement that also carries D3.
I was told they like strawberries but, they get too gooey and I'm having a big problem with fruit flies! I get these flies no matter if it's veggies or fruit!

Re: Iguana food
My girl really likes the repcal and will generally go for it first. Like Steph I give about a 1/4 cup moistened very well on top of the greens.Og the bulk of the diet (75-80%)should be collard, mustard and turnip greens. Being in the south you should have no trouble finding those. Green beans, orange skinned squashes, parsnips are all good choices. The spinach and carrots are not the best choice, nor are cabbages like kale. They are ok for a once in a while addition but should not be fed daily. Some iguanas have a problem with tomatoes and citrus (too acid) but I have given Zok a slice of orange from time to time. They also should not get bananas very often. Melons are great for hydration.

Re: Iguana food
I don't feed mine spinach it has too many oxalates which can bind the absorption of Calcium.
Dizzy gets a daily mix of collards, mustard, kale, endive, escarole and dandelion greens with butternut squash and various other veggies including bell peppers and whatever we have laying around. Also he LOVES orange and watermelon as a rare treat. I don't use any commercial pellets, mainly because rep-cal isn't in the stores here so I just don't bother.

Re: Iguana food
You can give them as a TREAT, or as a bribe if that's what it takes, they just are devoid of benefits for the iguana, as are most fruits, veggies and greens are just more balanced, fruits usually have too much phosphorus and not enough calcium.

Re: Iguana food
I sometimes use bananas to bribe my ig as well. Shameless, I know.
Bananas are high in protein. My understanding was that animal protein is very, very bad for iguanas, and a fruit or vegetable that is high in protein is not that much better. It's like a candy bar to them. A little banana once in awhile as a treat won't hurt them, but if they eat it a lot, it can. Mine gets a mixture of collard, mustard and turnip greens and various other veggies, depending on whatever's avalable at the store that week. For some reason, he hates squash, though. If I put in in his food, he'll refuse to eat it, period. He also gets grapes and bananas occassionally as treats. Usually, when I'm trying to get him to cooperate with something he doesn't really want to do.

Re: Iguana food
Bananas are fine as an occassional treat, just not as a constant food. The problem is they have too much potassium.

Re: Iguana food
Tomatoes are another treat that Dizzy loves, but I think it's just because it's red, he also tries to eat red pens and shirts and candles and pop cans and bedsheets (get the picture i'm painting here, he's into everything)
