female won't move after egging

Hi all....Spot-o-rama will not climb since her last delivery of 21 eggs. Vet says she is ok. He checked her over...no x-rays or anything tho...

This was her first clutch of eggs...she seams depressed. She will eat if I put a treat on top of her salad, but will not eat unless I do. She is about 2 years old. She gets misted two times a day. I change her pond every day..Its a I and I half inch deep pond..(plenty of room for her to lay in). She gets all the light and UV.....I have had two other Igs before and she is the only one who has 'layed around' like this. When I clean her habitat she will bow up at me and try to whip me...this is normal....but she just will not move around like she did before having her babies!!!
She has only pooped three times since February 1st. I'm getting worried. My vet is the only one around who will even look at a iguana. I think he may just be taking my money....
anyone have a suggestion as to what I should do to 'cheer' her up????

Sounds to me like you need a second opinion. You may have to drive a while to find another vet, but I highly recommend doing so. Here is a link to a good vet resource:

I agree Steph! This calls for a different vet! The acting depressed concerns me. This does not sound good. Immediately after laying they may be exhausted but should quickly recover and start eating like pigs to make up for lost time. There is the possibility taht all the eggs were not laid. The only way to tell if all the eggs came out is an Xray.

I gotta agree with the both of them. A good vet would have done an x-ray. This is a red flag for one that doesn't know igs very well. She may have retained a couple of eggs...or one or more has burst inside. This could be very serious and I urge you to seek another vet...now.

Bad News

Thanks for all your advice...Spot-o-mania died. I had found another vet in Pensacola and was going to make an appointment.

She is burried under her 'escape oak tree'. She got away from me one day while sunning and 'hawled a--' on her hind legs up this huge tree. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen. Thank God my son was home to climb the tree to get her down. She tore his arms and chest up trying to get away from him, but he held on....I think that day he became a man!!!

(wish there was a 'crying your eyes out Icon!!)

leeslynn... I'm SO sorry to hear that Spot died. It sounds like you're remembering the good times, though, and that helps.

We're all here to help you through the grieving process if you need.

<<hugs>>

Leeslyn- It's more than likely that Spot died from a burst egg or binding. Your vet was negligient for not x-raying her, it's a standard procedure for gravid igs. Really ****es me off.

You cared for her the best you could and now she waits for you in the Rainbow Tree, feeling healthy and happy and eating all the good food she can.

My prayers are with you.

I'm so sorry to hear about your girl! I had a feeling it was bad. If there was a burst egg...the prognosis is usually grim if not caught immediately. They go down in a matter of days. Your vet was in complete fault!! By neglecting to x-ray was a foolish act and though it may not have saved her life...depending upon how long ago the egg burst...she could have had an easier passing if the results were found soon enough...and could have saved her life if it was a result of the laying itself.

Grrr....

You have her in a good, safe place now. She will never want for anything again while she waits for you at the bridge.

I'm so sorry to hear about Spot.
It wasn't your fault... it just confirms something I've been pondering since the rough start I had with my snakes -- sometimes I think we need to trust our instincts (even in spite of veterinary advice.)
As others have said, there may have been nothing the vet could have done to save Spot either way: but your instincts that something was seriously wrong proved more correct than your vet's evaluation.

It sounds like she would be very happy with her resting place under the escape oak tree! I wish you and your family a lot of strength at this sad time.
